weight distribution hitches with sway control? Which one for me?

Been doing alot of research online and on this forum. But Just wondering if all WDH with sway control do the same thing? Which Brand do I get? so many choices..

I got a the trailer hitch weight as 415. so adding stuff to it I will say my hitch weight will be around 520lbs. Now my question is Do I get a WDH just for that 600lbs? can I go higher like 800lbs? or even 1000lbs?

This is so confusing. Does the brand make a differnece in choosing the right WDH for my trailer? or truck?

Anyway I did a serach on amazon and this is what is showing up. Please advise on which one I should buy and why?

I'm just picking up this top 4 on amazon. Any suggestion which one I should get. My concern is reliablity and lightweight.

You need to get sway bars as close as possible to hitch weight. Actually knowing your real hitch weight is very important, as I harped on in the other thread. I bought the Fastway E2, trunnion style. The bars are 600 lb, which is what I believe my actual hitch weight is closest to.



Do NOT use bars rated too low, or too high for hitch weight. My 600 lb bars have been working great. I paid 351 bucks for it a few years ago on etrailer.com, that order included a hitch ball. The hitch system is about 100 lbs.

That hitch is crazy light, half of my weight. A few hundred bucks more than mine was though. I'm not familiar with chain style, I have bars. I don't know if the 1400 lb tongue rating is a one size fits all. Maybe that style just has a max limit. The bar style I have has 600, 800, 1k, and 1.2k size bars available.

I see the one you have is 30 Pounds. very light.. I was thinking about getting this, but read some review stating you need a to purchase a bigger ranch for this that will cost additional $70.

As I mentioned in your other thread, since your truck only has 990lbs of payload, you should go with the Andersen. It's perfect for smaller TTs and half the weight of traditional WDHs.

I'm looking at the anderson the weight is 50lbs. the fast e2 is only 30lbs..

**edit - I see Amazon lists it as 30 lbs. That is WAY off. I actually googled trying to find weight, can't find it. One guy said 80 lbs, sounds about right.

So amazon description is wrong.. Glad I didnt purchase that.. I'll stay with the Anderson hitch . at 50lbs. I guess that is the lightest of them all..

You will not be disappointed with the Andersen. FYI, the shipping weight when I got mine was 65 lbs, and my guess is that it was a little high.

There are reports of not being able to get enough weight transfer back to the front of the tow vehicle with the Andersen (compared with Equalizer and similar). In doing my research, the problems with Andersen seem to come when the tongue weight is approaching tow vehicle limits, or the rear suspension allows a lot of sag for a reasonable tongue weight.

In my situation, towing an A-frame (420lb actual tongue weight) with a FWD minivan, I need a pretty good weight transfer to keep weight on the front drive wheels and the rear end sag limited. Cargo capacity is 1187lbs, so that wasn't a factor. So I went with the E2 600/6000. Next size down in E2 was 400/4000, which was deemed too light. I ended up using 6 washers to get the weight transfer where I wanted, and am very happy with the E2. Doesn't mean the Andersen would not have worked - I wish I had the $$ to experiment.

But I didn't want to take the chance - I tested towing without a WDH, and the porpoising was very annoying to possibly dangerous.

I agree with this advice. I also have a fastway E2. I'd suggest looking at some YouTube videos. There will be lots of opions expressed there as well, but you might find some help too.

I have recently been through 3 different hitches, an E2 1000, An Andersen, and now an Equalizer 1000. I have (now HAD) a 2019 Ram 1500 Eco diesel for my 8900 lb. 35 foot travel trailer. It was maxed out in every way, and a 2500 is being delivered today. That said, for your use, I would go with the Andersen. It provides good weight distribution as well as sway control, is easy to set up, is quiet, and most of all is lighter than the others. The E2 worked fine, but my tongue weight actually bent the bolts (I later put the tongue on a scale, found it was 1390 lbs.). The Equalizer works fine, but is very heavy. I have since relocated my propane and batteries and the tongue is now 1050 lbs. Bottom line, go with the Andersen. It is easiest to set up and silent, will work fine for your weight. You need to know your actual weights ready to go. A tongue scale is just $100, and you can easily weigh everything else on any truck scale. Final thought: What class hitch is on your van? Probably a class III, which may not be enough for your trailer. Most newer 1/2 ton trucks have a class IV, can handle 1100/11000 lbs. 3/4 trucks usually have a class V, can handle much more weight.

I prefer the Equal-I-Zer as the parts are available anywhere. You get what you pay for. It is the best I have used out of 3. I would check if the 6k head allows you to just switch to the 10K bars if you upgrade in the future. EX on my 10k unit, you have to change out the head to go up to the 12K bars. This is the only drawback I have seen w/ the Equalizer. I added the nylon hanger pads on mine to eliminate the low speed squeaks.
The Andersen is also good for light trailers, but limited as weigh goes up. The prices are close and just think the Equalizer is more solid.
