weight / type of car to tow ?

Hi, Hubby and I are newbies also at this. We have a Sunseeker E450 (thats all I know) Thinking of pulling a car when we go on extended trips . The book says it has a 5,000 lb pull capacity. The car we now have is a Chevy Traverse ( think it weighs more that allowed ) . Hubby is thinking about getting a different car . Me being a larger than average person I like the room in the traverse.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for another car to look into ? I have to add that we have 6 Chihuahuas that go with us on our road trips along with a son who is disabled so something in the line of the traverse or equinox , something with room.

Thanks
Sandy

I have a Sunseeker 3010DS and it pulls a Buick Enclave just fine.

Weight it loaded for travel.
One model has a curb weight of 4647 lbs - that's good to go!

My Enclave weighed 5200 with full fuel and 100# of gear in back. The Traverse is 3-400 lbs lighter. You should be fine but weigh the MH and check the GCVW to be sure you are not over the allowed weight.

Chargeit2him............

You mentioned that maybe a Chevy Equinox might meet your needs.

You may want to really consider this vehicle. There are lots of them out there as tow vehicles (check the owners manual for flat towing or recreational towing the vehicle) and it is substantially lighter for your RV and it's limits. Not sure if the Equinox can be 2 or 4 wheel drive, but the owners manual should identify the specifics.

Good morning, just saw this thread. I have a new 14 Jeep Grand Cherokee that weighs over 5000 lbs loaded with gear and our bikes. I have a 2012 Sunseeker and it's rated for 22,000 lbs gross combination vehicle weight rating. Mine came with a 5000. Lb hitch. He dealer upgraded the hitch for me to a 7500 lb one. Just because I'm very conservative and it's a 40,000 dollar jeep.

We after many months of looking for hitch stuff are on our first trip. I have blue Ox base plates and a Roadmaster Blackhawk 2 tow bar and a rvibrake2 for the braking duties.

I hardly know the Jeep is back there, it towed beautifully on our first excursion.

Just noticed you have a 2014 Sunseeker. Go out and look at the hitch. There is a tag on it that says its maximum rating. It should say 7500 lbs. I think you are ok. My 2012 was upgraded to 2014 specs.
