I have a 2017 f350 . I don’t drive it a lot I’ve got an 02 7.3 farm truck I drive most of the time. The 17 model is the first truck with def I’ve had , it uses very little def I was wondering about the def in the tank going bad it’s exposed to various temperatures and it’s likely to be that a full tank could last up to a year . I had no idea how much it would use when I bought the truck it had 1/2 a tank and I filled it, that was in July and I still have over 1/2 a tank . I hope to be camping more next year and using it up but until then I was wondering what I should do ?

Apparently our Canadian neighbors are covered by the Consumer Protection Acts, which sounds similar in nature to Magnuson-Moss.

I get free VW Adblue as part of the dieselgate "fix" at least for the next 4 years. It holds over 5 gallons and I think it will last my whole 10,000 mile oil change interval, but if not I just bring it to the dealer and they have to refill it. If it makes the 10,000 mile oil change I pay for the oil change but they top off the Adblue for free.
After that I think a delete is I'm my future.

I have the same on my 2015 2500HD Chevy Duramax.
Here is a release about the DEF fill and its gauge on the new 2020's Chevy's - "Diesel DEF tank/filler enhancements. The Diesel Exhaust Fluid tank is relocated farther back on the Silverado HD’s frame and out of sight from the exterior, and the inlet is located next to the fuel filler for more convenient filling. An electronic gauge readout for the DEF fluid level is added to the Driver Infotainment Center of diesel-equipped models."
I think that means they will tell have full it is instead of just being "OK".

That's what I thought, couldn't remember for sure what it was called up there. Thanks for the research.

What kind of temps do you see? The lower the temp (especially now), the longer it will last.

The gauge doesn't tell you the shelf life which he's asking.

5.5 I believe on the pickups. 8 for the cab and chassis models.

DEF
Our truck had a 1/2 a tank when we bought it and the dealer gave me a 2.5 gal jug of Mopar DEF. I used that and still have a 1/2 tank. I'll either use Peak Blue DEF or O'Reilly brand which ever is on sale when I need more.

What DEF
I use the SuperTech from Walmart, because;
It's all the same stuff, water and Urea.
They sell a lot, so it's fresh, but I check the date to be sure.
It's cheap.
The included flexible spout is really beneficial to pouring it into the GM underhood fill opening.
The comments about storage life, storage temperature are correct. I keep the tank level low in hot weather, and keep any inventory in a cool basement or refrigerator. This stuff will eventually deteriorate to due to evaporation of the water and turn into a white crystalline solid, which can be seen where any is spilled and left to dry.
I hope this is helpful.

I didn't see anyone else post this. I keep an empty plastic DEF container and fill it at the pumps at truck stops. When I need it, I fill my truck and then refill it at a truck stop pump. Approximately $7.25 to fill.
I've been doing this for over 4 years and have towed my 5th wheel around the country 3 times and from Florida to Alaska and back once. Going through Canada and the Yukon I'll carry two containers. No issues so far.
So why doesn't anyone else do this?

I use Blue DEF from Bi-Mart. Regular price there is $7.97 for 2 1/2 gallon box but I bought two boxes on sale at $6.99 each. They sell a lot and it is fresh.
My MBS (Sprinter) has a 6.6 gallon DEF tank. After 5000 miles I refilled the tank before getting any warning. I expect at least that on the current tankfull as the gauge shows just above half full with nearly 3000 additional miles

I’ve heard of a few people doing this. I don’t as I don’t see many pumps in my journies. I also don’t feel like hauling around empty jugs on my trips.

Now that I’m in a Chevy I’m using GM branded def to avoid any warranty issues. I only mention it in case other dealerships really believe their off brand def is superior to others.

you should have told your RAM dealer that the DEF is about 95% water. I don't know the exact formula but that is close i think

Already covered in posts #28 and #30 in this thread, 67.5% water.

Most convenient place is a truck stop, AKA where semi actually fill up, because lets face it truck drivers aren't going to buy def in gallon jugs daily unless they have no other option. and it should be getting delivered by the tanker VS swapping out totes or jugs.
If you go to a place but there is never any semi trucks there ... then yeah I suspect age might be an issue with the stuff in the tank-tote.
If a dealer told me bad def I would ask for a sample to be sent out to be analyzed.
One thing not mentioned is contamination. Dirt, dust, oils, funnels, cross contamination ETC. I'm not expert on this but from what I have been told cleanliness is of upmost importance. Sensors that say bad DEF may actually be DEF that has dirt in it, which would explain why a simple drain and fill works.
Even contamination from diesel is possible say you put the wrong filler in the wrong filler port. It happens.
Or you can own an older truck and not worry about DEF.
