I am looking at the 2015 Chevy 2500HD work truck tomorrow. It's a gas, 4x4, crew cab, regular bed, cloth interior, 52k miles. I think it is everything I need in a truck. And it's $25k. That nets out at $12k cost to me after tax, tags, title and trade. $12k and I can be driving a truck instead of a saloon car.

But then I keep seeing the same type trucks in diesel for $34k. Just $9k more and I get an oil burner. I don't need an oil burner. Any reason I should spend another $9k?

Tow

The gas is fine, as long as you stay below the tow limits. Your payload numbers are higher w/ gas in a 3/4 ton. It will be less expensive to maintain, not to open a can of "Worms". W/ the diesel you have longer life, engine brake, and higher resale. The $9 difference is more than the original price difference. The years you are looking at on the diesel, they were still working out some of the bugs w/ emissions, IMO. Over 10K and longer trailers + 30',are more relaxed to tow w/ diesel than gas. Also, towing in the mountains, the turbo diesel does not have the 5% power lose per 1k' of elevation. I love my diesel, and the auto engine brake in the mountains is impressive. I can set mine at 60 mph and go up and down 6% grades all day, no drama.

Anything I should look at on a 2015 Chevy 2500HD gasser? From the pics, it seems to be in great shape. He's asking $25,800 which is on the high end of KBB. I was thinking of offering $23k and settling at $24k.

Looks like a nice truck.

On your $9k question, the diesels are very, very nice to drive. Only you can determine if that extra $9k is worth it, but it would be to me.

Carmax. I found mine on carmax and they even shipped it to me from Virginia. They warrantied it and the price was well below bluebook (even with shipping). My mechanic looked it over before I bought it and said it was a great deal. I have had it for 8 years now.

That truck you are looking at looks good. Especially for a work truck. My only answer concerning the diesel over gas might be where you tow. If you plan on towing in mountains for any length, you may want to consider the diesel. It will likely provide much better towing in the hills than the gas.

If you are good with the gas otherwise, I think the truck you found would be as good as any you may come across.

We have a 2017 2500 HD WT, extended cab, 6.0 gas, 6L90 trans., 4.10 gears. The carrying capacity, yellow sticker on the b-pillar, is 2881.

It pulls our 7488# 2606WS just fine. Granted, we're in the SE so climbing the Appalachian plateau and wandering around the Smoky mountains is the hardest it works. And I will say the trans. programming doesn't make sense to me, but that can be overridden by manually controlling the shifting.

It is thirsty. Towing mileage can run from 6.5 to 8.5 mpg. Empty local driving it does around 13.5. Steady 55 - 65 I've seen 15 - 16. That's on 87 octane.

Nothing is perfect, but from my research it seems that the 6.0 / 6L90 combination is pretty close to bullet proof.

Overall I'm quite pleased with the truck. And I especially enjoy the sound of the 6.0 spinning at 4200 rpm!

Think of what your next camper/RV will be.......bigger, heavier, 5th wheel, toyhauler?

UPDATE from OP:

I bought it! The 2015 2500HD with 52k miles. Looked at it today and it is in great shape. The guy had 4 cars and this one never got driven. I love it! Perfect for us. $24,500. That's mid range on the charts but the condition of the truck was immaculate, so I paid a bit for that.

I did have an interesting conversation with my wife about trucks. She did not want a white truck. Makes it look like a work truck, she said. I explained that 80% of the heavy duty trucks are white and it's much harder to find a good deal on a colored truck. She was willing to accept that, but then she asked why we can't get a 1/2 ton. She liked my 2009 Tundra (which I used as a daily driver). I explained that the HD truck will allow us to tow anything care free and do truck things better. She wasn't buyin' what I was sellin' but went along with me on the test drive. When she saw the truck pull up, her comment was "that is huge" followed quickly by "do we really need a truck that big?" I thought it looked awesome!

I get told to "only do it once".
That's how I got a diesel Denali.
Of course, it goes both ways....

3/4 ton Ford F150

We have a 2014 Ford F-150, 4x4, not used as work truck, it’s a super crew, and loaded! Black with gold trim, very nice!

I got a 2015 Ford F250 XL crew cab 8 foot bed from Avis Rental in NJ. They turn their fleet over every 2 years. It had 23000 miles on it. I got it for 10 grand less than comparable trucks. I added my own cruise control and brake controller modules and programmed them myself with freeware. It tows great.

3/4 ton truck

Sorry if this is a duplicate as I didn't read the comments. I found my 1st 3/4 ton 4x4 on wheels on deals magazine and my 2nd 3/4 ton on Carfax.com. Carfax.com is great! It shows if it's been in an accident, how many owners, rental, personal use ect.

Not sure where you are US but Dave Smith motors in the Kellog Idaho BBC is one of the highest volume dealers in the US. They have selection and fair pricing. I found a 2010 Ram 2500 with less than 75,000 miles.
