I no longer have a front mounted hitch. When I did the rack in post #18 is one of my applications. I carried 3 kayaks and if I was loading/unloading a boat on a steep ramp on the Mississippi River I hooked up the trailer to the front to keep the rear wheels on dry ground. Worked great. Never used it for bicycles but I have witnessed that use.

Thank you all for the replies. It's nice to hear about uses and potential issues with carrying bikes up front. I'll likely move forward with it as it's only about $135 and would be useful in multiple ways.

Very interesting concept with the front receiver. Where did you have it installed? I am not a DYI type guy in this sort of task. Any idea if this would help push a 34 ft TT into a tight spot as opposed to backing? Feel free to private message me with thoughts on that. Thanks.

Have 2" front hitch on Ram 3500. Use it for bikes. Bought a Thule 4 bike rack, but couldn't see over the bikes. Heavy mods involving cutting and welding bike rack solved the issue. If you can find such a thing as a "short" bike rack you are a better man than me.

I used one for over 10 years on my 3/4 ton GMC van. I used a bike rack and a platform. Preferred the platform so on short stops I could remove the platform with bikes intact.

I have a front receiver on my Chevy.Silverado 2500 series . Instaltion was very easy .it took me about 45 min.to install. There was two types of receivers . One where you have to cut the deflector and one that has no cutting. Curt was the no cutting. We put 3 to 4 bikes on the rack .

I purchased the Curt 2” reciever fot the front of my 2016 F150 so I could carry my mobility scooter on the carrier that came with it and still pull the travel trailer. Makes life easier.
Just be aware of your surroundings.

Bike rack
I have tried it both ways. Consider if you have your spare tire in the back, you may have to be able to move the spare to where the bikes fit, w/o covering the tail lights. I have a Kuat bike rack w/ wheel trays, I have to put my TT spare in the truck bed. This is what I am currently doing, after adding strut braces to the bumper.
W/ the receiver hitch in the front, I am looking over the 2 bikes and the rack while driving. When putting up front, you may have trim the bash plate under the oil pain. Or you have to take the receiver hitch or bash plate off to change oil. My wife did not like looking thru the bikes as we drove. Friend has it on front on his F-250 w/ a mid-range rack and did not like watching his bikes bounce.
I have a V front so the double receiver hitch and rack is not an option.

hitch
I have also used front hitch for Kayaks rack along w/ 1 bed rack. I liked the hitch well for that, though it does howl on the highway, very secure.

We have the Curt front hitch on our 2003 Super Duty. Works great for hauling our bikes.

Looks like a good set up. At this point, I am sold on one.

We do and the only problem is that it obstructs the light a little at night.
So we try to carry the 4 bikes in the front hitch only when we travel with daylight!

Trailer's bike rack:
My trailer came with what is advertised as a fold down "bike rack". I don't love the idea of our bikes hanging off the back of the trailer and frankly, it's platform has no tie down points or support to hold bikes.
Truck bed:
I have the bed of the truck; however, its usual packed with a propane tank, generator, 24" fire pit, deep cycle battery, firewood and other miscellaneous items. I can lay the bikes down but need to take the wheels off and it ends up being a mess of bike parts to dismantle.
Truck's 2" receiver hitch:
Out for the obvious reason that the trailer is connected.
Trailer tongue rack:9
Looking into this option, they seem ok but are expensive ($200+ just for the 2" mount) and only have a 100 lbs capacity. This won't work as our bikes + trailer hitch mount rack are about 125 lbs.
This has lead me to look into a 2" front receiver hitch for my truck. This is intriguing to me for the following reasons:
1. Our bike rack can easily slide in and pin in place.
2. It's a potential tow point.
3. I have a small boat that is parked in a very tight space. This would allow me to move it with the truck as oppose to muscle it around.
So my questions:
1. Who here has one of these hitches and do you like it?
2. Beyond the above 3 uses, what else can they be used for? My wife is on board with the idea but more uses would be better.
Here is the hitch I'm looking at:

And here's how it looks on a Super Duty:

Maybe this would work for you

As someone else sharing the roads with you if you do adopt this idea.......
Please be sure your vision is not obstructed....I’m ahead of you.....either coming or going.
Also, please be sure I can see you lights through the bike hardware......either headlights, or most certainly turn indicator lamps. You might be trying to tell me something.

For those of you who have this front setup... Do you find the bikes are covered in bugs after a trip? Or, they are peppered with stones/dirt/sand from the road?
Lastly, are the headlights obstructed?
I'd like to do this to my 2013 Sierra 3500 Duramax.

You do know you can just put 1 or 2 bikes on it don't you?
I posted this video just to show another option instead of hanging from a bike rack.
Here is another inexpensive option for the original poster.
Hangwheel
