The thing to look for is if the vehicle has a factory installed towing package. Features include a hitch receiver, a lower rear-end differential gear ratio, transmission cooler, larger capacity alternator, pre-wired plugs for trailer and brake controller. Sometimes a beefed up suspension too. If you find an F-150 with a towing package, the rating will be much higher that the example you gave.
I just bought a Colorado 2019 on Tuesday. Those are the numbers I have. I didn't go to a 3500 / 350...I just came out of a GMC 2500 and DOWNSIZED !!! (poking the bear a little bit)

What’s the weight of your Patriot The WolfPaq? How’s that Colorado working for you?

Colorado towing capacity

It all depends on which motor you have in your Colorado will depend on the safe weight you can tow. The sticker which has a silver back ground is located at the base of the door pillar between the front seat and the back seat. It gives you GVWR GAWR FRT GAWR RR. In the owners manual will also give you information about what you can or can not tow. Like I said in a previous post my safe weight for towing is 6200 pounds. So if you buy a trailer (lets say 5000 pounds) and your max safe tow is 5500 pounds it doesn't leave much for hauling anything. My trailer which I have right now is well in this window of safely towing. If your trailer moving forward and backwards it sounds like it is trying to push your vehicle. It is just like towing another vehicle with a tow strap. You slow down and there is slack in the strap then you get the jerk from the vehicle being towed. So if that is what you were feeling then maybe your trailer is too much for your tow vehicle. The safe tow weight is 20 to 25 % of the max tow of your vehicle. A WDH hitch doesn't increase how much you can tow, it spreads the weight you are towing through out both the TV and the TT. Also the tongue weight which is 10% of the total towing capacity. You have to deduct the 20 to 25% of total TW. So if you have 760 pound tongue weight the safe weight would be 620 pounds.

That's pretty! We saw one just like it at the dealership when we got the F-150...which, have I mentioned, is ALREADY in the shop!

Three days we owned it when the master cylinder blew and the brakes went out. Luckily we were parked and didn't have the trailer hooked up. Apparently, it's a known problem with F-150's , a defective master cylinder. There's currently a class-action lawsuit against Ford.

Up-side is the dealer is fixing it. They actually don't have to when you buy "no-warranty". We did buy an extended warranty, but it doesn't kick in before the first freaking payment! I do always tell people I'm a lawyer when I buy things. I think it makes them a little more flexible when it comes to making things right. (I don't tell them I'm not the suing kind of lawyer .)

If an admin could close this one out so it doesn't keep going forever, I'd appreciate it.
