Would you buy a truck that has been in an accident?

UPDATE #1: Truck has already been sold.

UPDATE #2: Different truck has been purchased.

A very nice truck popped up this morning on my radar. Fits all my needs and wants. I saw the price and got excited. Then I saw the Carfax with a reported accident. Now I know why the price is $10k below what I have been seeing. Would love to buy it because it is exactly what I want. I would like to get your thoughts on whether to proceed, and if so, what precautions to take (warranty, inspection, price).

So, here are the details:

They are asking $37,881.

CARFAX One-Owner. 10,815 miles. Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat 2017 Ford F-250SD XLT 4WD TorqShift 6-Speed Automatic Power Stroke 6.7L V8 DI 32V OHV Turbodiesel 2017 Ford F-250SD XLT in Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, 4WD, 6.7L TURBO DIESEL, FX4 OFF ROAD, 4X4, NAVIGATION, CLOTH HEATED SEATS, SYNC 3, REAR CAMERA, CREW CAB TRUCK, 4WD.

It's for sale because the previous owner would not buy/own a crashed truck.

I would not either but I'm weird I won't buy a "new" item if the box has been opened.

It really depends on if the savings is worth the worry for you personally . The good news is that the damage was reparable what ever it was, so likely there were no major structural issues. Its amazing what will total a truck these days, so it could have been a minor accident. Get it checked out independently. Pay attention to how it drives, how the doors close and if it wasn't a ford, I would say take a magnet to find if there is body filler in the panels. I assume the 2500's have aluminum panels as the 150's do. Personally, I would strongly consider it based on the current cost of trucks these days.

Looks like it was hit from behind it did not mention frame damaging or straightening and may have only been sheetmetal. It was issued a normal title and not salvage so the damage did not exceed the cost of the truck. I would have it inspected by a good frame/body shop and if they give the OK I think I would consider it.

If it is an insurance job it is unlikely now that they used filler on a panel. If there is damage to a panel that would otherwise need a filler, now they just replace and paint the whole panel.

No way. This seems like one of those "penny wise, pound foolish" things. You will have no idea how well it was repaired, until you find out it wasn't.

I'd consider it if at was just cosmetic damage to the bed area. If they had to straighten the frame or the engine compartment was damaged or they had to do major work on the cab or where there is a lot of electronics or wiring, I'd pass. If the airbags didn't deploy, that's a good sign.

Structural damage can mean a lot of things - or nothing. The repairs were obviously done in an approved shop, not a chop shop, and reported which is a good thing and likely paid for by the insurance co. Try to get a hold of the paperwork from the previous owner or the shop where the repairs were done and do a close inspection and go from there.

Personally I would pass on it.....It's always going to be worth less because of the damage...So it's like pay me now or pay me later...If you do purchase and at some point decide to get rid of it may bite you back.

Also, if you are planning on selling the truck in the next few years, you are not really getting a discount, because the crash is already priced in, and still will be when you sell it. It is only really a discount if you plan on keeping the truck and driving it for a long time or until the wheels fall off.

Edit: Post #10 beat me to it.

Probably sold yesterday or the day before. I've noticed when I buy vehicles that many dealers tend to be slow at updating their website.

Yup, they said it sold last night. Makes that decision real easy.

That's too bad. Like a lot of the replies, I would consider buying a repaired truck, but I would try to see what was actually repaired and have it double checked - especially mechanically. One thing I have learned while shopping for vehicles or toys, there is always another good deal out there somewhere.

Way back in 1961 my dad bought me a brand new Buick Special. I was 15 at the time and had an accident doing 110mph. It did major front end and frame damage. The car was repaired at a Buick dealership and took approximately six weeks. People all said it would never drive and be the same. I drove it for another 90,000 miles and could never tell the difference. I think if it is an insurance job and goes back to the dealer for repair they will make it right.

I concur with this. I can't read the report but if it's not salvage title have it inspected. Cosmetic damage and replacement OEM sheet metal for the repair and I'd be good, that's a great price for that truck. I looked at some salvage titles for my boys when they were buying their first trucks, walked away from most as they were small independent sellers that are known to cut corners. Also check with your insurance carrier just to be safe.
