4 weeks Dang, I'm so jealous. It's cooled off down here on the south, no longer in the 100's. Hope you have a good time

I see you have Jacksonville, FL. on your list.

Bob, I see you have Jacksonville,FL on your list. If you are retired military, there is a very nice RV park on the Mayport Naval Station by the name of "Pelican Roost" RV park 904-270-7808. It is right on the St Johns River at the Atlantic Ocean. When you come down from Charleston on I-95, take the first exit after the Jacksonville Int Airport exit. Take the 9-A East , with the directions to Mayport Naval Station. If not retired military, right next to the Navy Station is "Hanna Park Campground" at 500 Wonderwood DR , Atlantic Beach, FL 904-249-4700.
It is right next to the Mayport Naval Station on the Atlantic Ocean. use the same directions as Pelican Roost, Mayport NAVSTA.

I just returned from a 6008 mile trip,I am retired Navy also.

Enjoy your trip

Daisy.....As a matter of fact we have reservations at Pelican Park for 3 days starting on the 10th. We stayed in Little Rock AFB FamCamp Thursday night....Also a very neat campground for us OLE retiret military folks.
Just for the record.....Scott AFB, near Belleville, IL, Tinker AFB. in Oklahoma City and Memphis Naval Air Station are all worth a stop if you are in those areas.
Thanks for the good words about Mayport. We are looking forward to getting there.

4 Week Adventure update

WELL...Day 3 and we finally have internet...AND cable TV. We feel like we have been in the deep woods for 2 nights.
Total 810 miles so far. We are at an ESCAPEE campground just north of Knoxville, TN. Going to spend 3 nights here seeing the sights and cooling our heals before we head out Tuesday for Charlotte, NC.
The F350 is rocking along at 62 to 64 mph, running in TOW/HAUL all the way in 6th gear at right at 1600 RPM. All of the hills just west of Knoxville were not an issue. The truck never down shifted AT ALL...and maintained 62/64 mph on speed control.
Pictures of the rig at the first Arkansas visiter center. Little Rock AFB FamCamp, and Jackson, TN campground last night.
Got to meet a nephew in Nashville for lunch today. That was a bonus.....Great visit and lunch at Cracker Barrel........BTW.....Sure wish there was a way to know if and when Cracker Barrel had parking for RV's. The Nashville, TN one at Exit 210 DOES NOT have RV parking...and it was touch and go getting around the store and we parked in the entrance, next to the street. It all worked...but was a challange.

You mentioned Huntsville, AL. Redstone Arsenal has two campgrounds (one by the river without sewer, one near the PX with full hookups including wi-fi).

Thank you sir. We have not nailed down the homeward legs yet. Depends how much time and money are left when we get that far.

We do appreciate the heads up.

Cold??

Night 1 in Knoxville.....Wake up at 5:00 AM...notice the pillow is cold...lay there thinking the furnace will kick on just any minute.......but it does not start. Then start thinking maybe the propane tank is empty.
Dang did not realize 43 degrees was SOOOOO cold outside.
Got tanks switched over,,,furnace restarted.....All is good.
Think I'll be looking for an automatic propane switch over device. Thinking our trailer from years ago had one. It will be worth its weight in gold.

I have one, but always keep the other tank closed. My fear is it will switch over and I won't notice, thern when the spare runs out you're in a pickle. Maybe you all aren't as absent minded as I am, lol.

If you come from Fl up I75 there is a military campground 5 miles after you cross into Georgia. It's at the Lake Park exit (exit 5) and it's called Grassy Pond. Not a resort, but the CG is pretty decent. Oh, and the pond there (Grassy Pond) has some of the largest Big Mouths in this area.

There is a nice Rv park

There is a nice RV park on the south side of Charlotte on I-77 at exit #90,
One mile from the NC/SC state line. The camp ground is "Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort" Phone #704-587-9116.

There is also a Camping World on I-77 just before you get into Charlotte.
If you are missing a Propane auto switch over valve, they should have them.

Day 4 Lazy day...Day 5 Cumberland Gap

Well after 800 miles in 3 days we laid low Sunday. Watched NASCAR and Football a bunch. We are at Raccoon Valley, Escapee Campground just north of Knoxville, TN.

Today we got up and drove to Cumberland Gap National Park. Very pretty park...but I'll bet in 2 or 3 more weeks the tree color would be breathtaking. The trees are just starting to change some.

We drove up the Pinnacle Road and walked 200 yards to the overlook. WOWZER.....What a view of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia....all from 1 spot.

Saw a deer right next to the visiter center and 2 more about 1/2 way up to the overlook. Pictures included.

On to Charlotte, NC in the morning for 8 days of visiting old family friends and visiting a lot of NASCAR tours...Hall of Fame, the racetrack, and some raceteam shops.

GREAT week in Charlotte

We have had a great week here in the Charlotte area. Cane Creek County Park campground is really wonderful...except for no cable or WiFi. But...what the heck. As I write this I am at Dale Jarrett Ford in Monroe, NC eating breakfast and catching up on e mail while Nancy does some laundry at a laundrymat.

Have met with some ole family friends in the area and done all of the touristy things involved with Charlotte and NASCAR. We have seen a bunch of the racre shops...Stewart-Haas, Earnhart-Ganassi, Petty, Rousch-Fenway, Hendrick, Richard Childress...Museum and shop areas and the winery, Dale Earnhardt Inc. Spent all day yesterday at Charlotte Motor Speedway touring and at the 4 wide drag strip at an 18 wheeler show and shine event. Not sure how many pictures I have taken this week...BUT.....342 yesterday alone. Thank you LORD for digital cameras.

Trying to add some pics here but its not working. I'll post a bunch next time we find a goot internet hook up.

Bob, it really got crappy here in Jacksonville

Bob, It really got crappy here in JAX/MAYPORT last night and today (Saturday) with a northeaster blowing, gusting up to 40 MPH. Suppose to be better by the time you hit Florida. Sure would hate for your visit to go bad while you are here??

The RV park at Mayport is small but one of the best. You have to go off base for the Exchange and commissary. But not far, straight out the gate about 2-3 miles on the right. They are open on SAT & SUN.

After you pass through the NS gate, stay in the right you hand lane, go to the second traffic light, bear right. You will pass a bunch of ships on the left, continue on. You will see a bunch of small campers on the right at MWR, next street you will turn left (signs mark RV park). follow the street north until you come to the RV park (about 3/4 mile).

Depending when you leave Charleston, you should be at MYPT, NS early afternoon. I will call you in the afternoon. I have a doctor's pre-surgery
appointment Monday at noon time, should only take about 1 hour.

You will have a fantastic view of the Navy ships in the basin at Mayport.
When they get underway for the sea buoy, the ships will pass within 150-200 yards of where you will be parked. (might make you try to re-enlist)

Charleston, SC.

Well we made it back to civilization this morning. Drove thru a lot of rain between Charlotte and Columbia, SC.

Had a great 7 nights in the Charlotte area. A lot of NASCAR race shop visits, Charlotte Motor Speedway and dragstrip, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame yesterday.

Lets see if some picture adding will work here. A sampling from Earnhardt/Ganassi, Rousch Fenway, Stewart Haas, and Pichard Patty Motorsports shops.
