Hopefully others will be able to chime in and offer suggestions.
On another note if St. Louis is anything like here in SoCal I would recommend booking the campground ASAP. Almost all state parks here are booked solid for the summer months when students are out of school.

Two good choices would be Lakeside 370 RV park in St. Charles, MO and the Casino Queen RV park in East St. Louis, IL. If you don't need full hookups then Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton , IL might work for you.

We stayed at the KOA on Route 66 near the Six Flags. It is close to the city. We enjoyed it. If you are there after school is out, I would expect it to be cwowded. We were there in the Fall and Six Flags was not open.

We stayed at Casino Queen RV park. Just across the Missouri in Illinois, shuttle to metro link train station (walking distance) into St. Louis, one stop to the gateway arch, a must see. Expensive RV park but deals at casino restaurant make up a bit.

it is a bit further than the 20 miles you requested, but missouri state parks usually allow you to see the site you want to reserve. now, if we could just get more states to do so, illinois in particular, things would be good.
merry christmas all.

There in one campground in the city -- St. Louis RV Park. Some people like it, but I would not choose to stay there.
As several folks have mentioned, the Casino Queen RV Park is just across the river in East St. Louis. We've stayed there several times and have been pleased with it. If you go there, I suggest you get off of the interstates at Memorial Drive in St. Louis (right in front of the Arch and the Old Cathedral). Cross the river using the Eads Bridge (the one just north of the Arch). Two quick lefts at the end of the bridge and you're there. You do NOT want to be wandering around East St. Louis.
Oakman mentioned Lakeside 370 RV Park in St. Peters. In fact, that's where I'm sitting as I type this. There are about 50 sites with paved roads, good gravel sites, and level pads. The one drawback is that there's not yet any shade. They're adding 50 more sites. There's a 140-acre lake, canoe and kayak rentals, a 2 1/2 mile paved hiking/biking path around the lake. It's about 9 miles west of the MO 370 / I-270 intersection, and about a mile east of the MO 370 / I-70 intersection.
KOA in Eureka is pretty good. West of there, at I-44 and US50 near Union is Pin Oak Creek, also a good spot. Edmund Babler State Park, off of MO 109 is also a good campground in a beautiful park, but much of it is electric only, usually with water nearby but not at your site.
To the east, check out Red Barn Rendezvous on I-55 at mile marker 23. You'll do well with any of those, depending on where you want to be.

There is a rv park in Cahokia IL just down the road from the casino queen rv park. There is also jelly stone campground next to six flags on hwy 44. There is also cuiver river state park near to St. Charles. if you don't mind a couple extra miles there are a couple state parks south of St. Louis. here is a link to state park info and to make reservations. Good campground
Now I know how really great it is to be a member of FROG. Not only did I get responces from members. I even got the Director of the group answer the thread. Thank you to all.
Happy Holidays to all.

I do want to post a word of caution about Babler State Park. The campground has three camping loop roads, two of those loop roads have a limited turning radius and are not big rig friendly. The sign warning of the limited turning radius is small and easy to miss.
I can’t tell you what size rig is too big for those loops but I will tell you that I won’t take my Crewcab F250 with my 35 foot Silverback down the loop containing only basic campsites nor the loop with sites numbered 38 to 51. Just giving a heads up.

We used the KOA in Granite Cuty, IL. on our very first RV trip in Oct 2010. Nothing very fancy but very close to interstate and just across the Mississippi River from north St. Louis.

In my opinion, Sundermeyer & Lakeside 370 are pretty much paved, no trees, but nice if you just need to setup and takeoff to do other things. There's also St. Louis RV park (I think that's the correct name) that's right near downtown. We like Pin Oak Creek RV park, but it's well outside of 20 miles.

We found a wonderful campground in Effingham, Lakewood Campground, not sure of distance to St Louis. This is a great campground on a lake with the cleanest facilities we have found!!! It is owned and operated by a retired USAF family and they have done their best to keep the grounds clean and neat. We have returned to this CG twice now, last time we stayed a few days. We had a problem with the rig once, while we were there and the owner knew a Mobile RV guy who came to our rescue....very reasonably too. Lots of large pull thru sites. Highly recommend this park!
