Got to meet Korczak Ziolkowski in 1964. My dad and I got to climb the stairs he built up the side of the mountain. Can't get anywhere close to it now. His kids are carrying on the carving.

You also have to stop at Wall Drugs. If possible try to stop there around lunch time. It is easy off and easy on and plenty of parking for the campers It's about 90 miles or so if I remember right before you turn off the highway for your campground.

What's really cool about Crazy Horse is old Korczak Ziolkowski and now his family have refused any government assistance for any part of the project. All the land around the monument is owned by the Ziolkowski's and is funded by donations and whatever they sell there. Supposed to be a college started there primarily for native Americans. Haven't been back there since around 74 or 75 so don't know what has taken place.

Blasting started on the Crazy Horse Memorial in 1948. Here's a couple of pictures I took when we visited in 2009. That's 61 years after the first blast. At that rate none of us will be alive to see the completed sculpture, if it's completed.

Mount Rushmore was never complete either due to lack of funding. Originally the plan called for the figures to be carved from head to waist. Here's a pic of what Mount Rushmore would have looked like if there had been sufficient funding. The photo was taken in the sculptor's studio.

They messaged me this morning from Wall, SD, at Sleepy Hallows RV Park. They visited the Badlands yesterday. Said it was 70 degrees the past couple of days, until a thunderstorm came through and dropped to 50.

I'll let you know as I hear more. Said cell phone service is bad, but they have access to wifi via their tablets at the campgrounds. They are continuing west on 90 to Yellowstone over the next couple weeks.

I've had pretty good luck campin at the Fish 'n' Fry near Lead. Been there several times, always either before or after Sturgis. You'll not see near the crowds at this time of year.

The KOA at the base of Devil's Tower is most awesome, scenery-wise, and if you're a fan of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", they show it every night in the summer.

Latest picture from her follows, posted yesterday to Facebook. Knowing my mom, she's not taking pictures with her phone during their daily adventures. They borrowed my Canon Rebel.

I haven't gotten any other updates.

We stayed there last year very nice campground, $2.00 pancake breakfast, chuck wagon dinner, coffee shop, ice cream shop, trail ride and 5 minutes from Mt. Rushmore. Enjoy

Thank you very much !
I am sure they are having a great time. I've been looking at bundle packages from Canon and Nikon,I like them both a lot. Unfortunately I probably won't be able to get one before we go. Aargh!

Thanks again for sharing !
