We stayed at Beaver Lake Campground a few years ago. Great people who are RV'ers too. Don't miss the Purple Pie Place in Custer. Also when visiting the Bad lands check out the minute man silo and tour. So much to see and do there. Enjoy!!!

There is a Passport America campground not to far from Rapid City and only a little ways from Custer State Park. The campground is at a place called Hermosa, the park is Heartland RV Park, it was like twenty bucks a night.

You all have given me so much to consider. Thank you all for the valuable inputs. It sounds like a area that could use more than just two nights. I'm afraid that is all we have time for.

There were so many sites to see around My. Rushmore we stayed at Palmer Gulch KOA for one week then moved on to Spearfish KOA where a new young couple owned it and made the stay very enjoyable and allowed us to go to Devil's Tower, Deadwood and Sturgis very easily.

With only two nights you may wish to pick Sundance or Custer and stay to see the sights in that area. Devil's Tower in WY would be a day trip all by itself. And the earlier suggestion to see Mt. Rushmore during the evening show is a great one. The lights come up on the monument after the sun goes down. Custer is in the center of the Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park/Needles highway area so it reduces your driving for a two-night stay and increases the sights you can see.

I really like The Roost in Custer. Very small park, but great people and close to town. Used it as a Central location for a week as I traveled around to all the sites.

Our hope was to do Devil's Tower today on our drive into SD and then continue on to Custer. Heavy rain threw a wrench into that plan. We decided on Elkhorn Ridge RV since it seems centrally located between DT and Mt Rushmore. We are not disappointed. It's beautiful. Thanks all for the feedback. Attachment 177128

Great choice. We saw that RV park 2 weeks ago when we drove up to Devil's Tower from Hill City. Plan on at least a 2 or 3 hour trip, one way, down to Mt. Rushmore. There is a lot of slow traffic and construction delays between Hill City and Deadwood.

Oh boy... 2-3 hours to go 66 miles?

Yes, traffic is one way just south of Deadwood, and you have to wait on a guide car to lead you through. They are grinding off pavement and paving. They seem to be working daylight till dark. Same situation a little father south of Deadwood, but in that case, it is due to guardrail work. Also, there is nowhere to pass when not in construction, so if you get behind a slow camper or a big slow truck, you are in for a long drive. It is worth it though.

Maps takes me around Deadwood on I-90 through Rapid City and 16 to Rushmore. That might be a good alternative.

That should be a really good alternative for you. I would go that way for sure.

Spearfish campgrounds
Spearfish has a great city campground,+ there's a KOA in town as well. I like them both.

I'm currently in the Three Flags RV Park in Black Hawk, SD (between Sturgis and Rapid City; exit #52 off I-90). Nice simple, clean park, reasonable rates (and, they accept Passport America). Decent WiFi. Their full hook up sites are completely filled this holiday week but, they'd be worth a call for other times. (605-787-7898) I'll definitely stay here again when in the area!

We just stayed at Custer's Gulch a couple of weeks ago. Nice rv park. Spacious grass area between pads which was great for kids/dogs. Wifi was marginal.
A few miles from Crazy Horse and a short drive to Rushmore. I would stay there again.

The Spearfish KOA is a very nice park, nicer than most KOA's, stayed there last year.
Elk Ridge is a beautiful park, haven't stayed there but saw it and will stay there next time we are in the area.

Another vote for Beaver Lake RV Park on the west side of Custer. We stayed there 9/5 - 9/10/17. Checks all your boxes for your needs. We found it to be convenient to range all around the Black Hills area. And it was an easy run westbound over to Devil's Tower. Quiet and well run. Also has a good number of cute rabbits nesting in dens through out the park. Lots of places to walk your dog and an enclosed dog run, as well if that is a need.
It's a Good Sam park.

Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City is great. Free morning pancake breakfasts in a large tent, beautiful large meadow with large sites around it. Will be going back soon.
