Campground between Devil's Tower and My Rushmore

I'm trying to find a nice campground with full hookups (30 amp) situated between Devils Tower and Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Check out locations in Spearfish. There is supposed to be a really nice city-owned RV park there, as well as other campgrounds.

I have two apps on my phone and iPad , one is rvparky and the other is rvparksandcampgrounds. With either apps you can find just about any campground there is. I live in North Carolina and I can look at campgrounds in Alaska. I can find campgrounds anywhere, in any state and Canada probably Mexico too

We stayed at Elkhon Ridge last year. Huge, level spaces with three sewer drops and 50/30/20 amp power available. Easy in and out. Staff are very welcoming. Great pool, laundry and bathroom, etc.

Yes, that is correct. Each one is about 90 minutes or less from Elkhorn but in completely the opposite direction.

look in Custer, easy access to Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, Custer State Park and more. We camped in Custer several years ago for a week, great area. Wish I could remember the rv park's name.

Great Stops to Visit

We visited both Mt. Rushmore and Devils Tower this time of year in 2017. To visit the Crazy Horse or Mt. Rushmore monuments, along with the sights of Custer State Park, we stayed at Big Pine Campground, located two miles west of Custer. It was convenient to the town of Custer for shopping and things and had a lot of nice shaded sites. The town of Custer is pretty cool because they have buffalo sculptures throughout the town and some nice little restaurants. Nice folks at Big Pine Campground too. Be careful on the roads around Custer State park because they include tunnels that a larger vehicles (even a standard dually pickup) cannot get through. For our trip to Devil's Tower last year we stayed a few days in Sundance,WY at a place called Mountain View RV Park and Campground. It was one of the best stops on our trip. (It would be a long daytrip to drive to visit Devil's Tower all the way from Custer, SD, especially because there's so much walking to do the trail around Devil's Tower.) Sundance was one of our "sleeper" stops with a lot more to see and do than advertised. We walked our dogs on a ranch road nearby (the ranch horse followed us down the road) and took day trips to walk on trails in the Black Hills National Park. There's a local office for Black Hills Natl Park right near the campground. We took a day trip to Cook Lake from Mountain View Campground, which is a gorgeous spot to visit and almost had the place to ourselves. Pack a great lunch and spend the afternoon. The little museum at the Crook County Courthouse (located in Sundance) is a fun place to look around, as it was the site of the jail where the Sundance Kid served his time for horse stealing. The have a great sculpture of the Sundance Kid in front of the Courthouse. Really enjoyed our visit to both Custer and Sundance. Message me with your email and I can send you some great photos.

Rushmore Shadows

Check Rushmore Shadows... they are near Rapid City, SD. Normal rate is $70 per night full hookup. When I booked for this summer they told me if I listened to their time share pitch I could stay, full hookup, 3 nights ... $39.00 total.. not per night.. but total cost.. with tax it comes to about $42. total cost. Not sure if I'll buy a time share but for that savings I listen to a 90 minute pitch...

Sorry... Did that once as a young pup. My time is too valuable to listen to someone's pitch when I'm not truly interested. It's a waste of my time and theirs.

We recently returned from a week in the Black Hills. We stayed at the Rafter J Bar Ranch, just a couple miles south of Hill City SD. It's beautiful and we recommend it highly. It's not exactly in the middle though: about 10 minutes to Rushmore and maybe 90 minutes to Devils Tower.

We have been there 3 times and stay in Custer State Park. The campground near the Game Lodge has water and electric but you will have to use their dump station to empty your tanks. There is a fence to keep the buffalo out of the campground.

A good circular day trip is from Mt Rushmore drive south down the Needles Highway (SD-87). Then go east through Custer State Park and north up the Iron Mountain Road (SD-16A) back to Mt Rushmore. There are 3 tunnels on the Iron Mountain Road that frame Mt Rushmore when you drive north through them. Both the Needles Highway and the Iron Mountain Road have narrow (one way at a time) tunnels on them. Be sure to be at Mt Rushmore at sundown to see the closing ceremony. The entrance fee for Custer State Park is not required if you are just driving through it. (Watch out for the buffalo in the park.)

You could try Rush-No-More RV Park in Sturgis. it lies between Rapid City South Dakota and Sundance Wyoming and is close to attractions in the Black Hills, The Badlands, Wall Drug, Deadwood and Devil's Tower. The only other place would be Chris' RV Park and Campground at Spearfish South Dakota, west of Sturgis.

Wasn't camping or RVing when we were there, many years ago on holiday from Australia, just wanted to jump in and say what a great part of the country it is. We trucked around from Rapid City in a Chevy 2500HD and saw Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse (crazy is right), the Badlands AND Deadwood as well as Devil's Tower. It was 'fun' trying to reconcile the Deadwood from the TV series with the tour coaches, the modern shops and the gunslingers wandering around town. Thought I'd drop in a few photos from the area.

We faced the same question after Devils Tower and opted to stay at the KOA just outside of Deadwood which was a fun town to visit. Rushmore was wonderful and I recommend you don't miss the Custer State park which is nearby and has spectacular scenic beauty and a wonderful wildlife drive where you will always see plenty of wild life from Buffalos to Antelope to Prairie Dogs. You can camp in the Park but we opted to exit on the west road to the town of Custer (nice!) at the Beaver Lake campground which was quite good. Enjoy!

Ditto, we stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch last year and visited Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devils Tower, Deadwood Cemetary, and more.

We just completed a 32 day trip that started with 4 nights in Custer and 3 nights at Devils Monument. In Custer, we stayed at Ft Wilikit RV camp. It's 1 mile up hwy 89 (Needles Hwy) from the town of Custer. I would definitely drive the Needles Hwy loop through the state park - lots of wildlife and beautiful scenery. You can easily do Rushmore and Crazyhorse and this loop in 1 day if you don't stop at every turnout like we did. If you want to see the Badlands, they're about 120 miles back to the east, and make for a full day of driving - 250 miles roundtrip. At Devils Monument, we stayed at the KOA right at the entrance to the monument. You can drive to Deadwood or Sturgis from here. We did Deadwood, but I didn't really care for it - nothing but motorcycle stores, bars and casinos.

Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy.
