We have driven both sides of the Great River Road. Where are you coming from and going to? Our favorite campground on the Mississippi River is Wyalusing SP in Prairie du Chen, WI. This cg is on top of a bluff overlooking the Mississippi & Wisconsin Rivers. Other campgrounds along the "Road" are Frontenac SP at Frontenac, MN., Perrot SP at Trempealeau, WI., Pikes Peak SP at McGregor, MN. & Mississippi Palisades SP near Savanna, IL. All of the parks have some view of the Mississippi River. This is beautiful country any time of the year but especially during the color change in late September and early October. Hope this helps you out. Have fun.

I live on the MN side, right in Winona, MN. is there a certain area that you are looking to go to or start from? the WI side is all 2 lane roads, winds in and out of the bluffs, mostly along the river. the MN side is not as much along the river. stop in wabasha and check out the national eagle center. if you like the movie grumpy old men, have lunch or dinner at slippery's right on the river. wisconsin side has about 7 vineyards you can visit as well, make an entire day out of that.

I was going to suggest Great River Bluffs S.P. in MN between Winona and La Crescent until I realized what you were driving. Most sites are on the small side, the road up is very steep, and there are no hookups.
It's a beautiful little park, but I could not believe how bad the mosquitos were in September, and I am from Upper Michigan, so I know mosquitos! Maybe I was just unlucky.

We will start in the St Paul area after visiting the grandkids and south from there. Will be traveling in a 40' Berkshire with a toad. Will be taking our time and spending a few days here and there. Skip
