I 35 tunnels
We are taking a trip to the northeast corner of Minnesota. Google maps and other gps systems are taking us up I 35 thru Duluth to the North. I noticed that there are a few tunnels up there between Duluth and Two Harbors. Does anybody know how tall they are? I 35 is a major hwy that runs from Texas to Duluth so I would guess these tunnels should be more than 14' in height. I tried a few searches but couldn't find an answer. According to the book our rig is 13' 4". Of course I assume it's taller. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

IH 35 ends in Duluth and to go on to Two Harbors it is a two or four lane road. I don't remember any tunnels but there may be. I do know that big rigs travel that route because of the shipping on the Lake. Have a great trip.

We encounter NO tunnels going to Two Harbor a couple of years ago. There is a tunnel/s North of Two Harbor, but it appeared to be tall enough for RV's.
Have a safe trip, check out a little sandwich shop downtown near the train station, it is behind the bar and grille. Nice area to visit.

Thanks for the info! I will post an update when we get home if we come across any tunnels! It's always very exciting to visit new areas!

I just checked I35 that turns into Rt 61 to Two Harbors. Just north of Duluth there are two bridges at 9' high. If you take the parallel road Rt 23 you will miss the bridges. Then I don't see low bridges to Two Harbors.

2 years ago we took I-35 to Duluth and then Rt 61 to Two Harbor, and there were no low bridges, went there with the Lacrosse, 11' 4''. RV's running all the time from Duluth on past Two Harbors. Should be no problem.

Rt. 61 is clear of any low bridges Two Harbors to Thunder Bay. But like said you need to run Rt.23 till it comes back into Rt. 61. This is from Allstays Low Clearance App.

Never got on Rt 23. Went from I-35 to Rt 61. Followed Trailer Life Navigator computer program. No LOW Bridges or Tunnels. Put in my length and height and followed Navigators routing.

We did the trip last year and I remember one tunnel and it was plenty large enough. We went from Duluth to Thunder Bay without issue. If you want to see a few pics along the way check out my profile and there is photo album from the trip.

We are staying at Penmarallter campground. Small family owned place from what I gather. It's just a place to park for a few nights. We plan on sight seeing during the day. Again thanks for all the info! I will try to find the trailer life route planner. Is that a free app? I followed our route on googles satellite view and can defiantly pick out three tunnels. It looks like there are some very nice green spaces above them. All part of the fun of rving!

My I-phone has an app for Allstays Low clearance. It was free or cheap but it has all the low bridges nation wide.

We stayed at Penmarllter also on our first extended trip with the Lacrosse. Nice family owned park, we stayed for a week and saw a great fireworks display down at the harbor, a classic car show paraded thru the campground. Older but nice campground about 2 miles out of town.
I don't think the Navigator computer program is still available. but you might check with Trailer Life. We have it on our house PC and own the laptop we take with us. Use it to plan all of our trips.
Have a nice trip and if I can help with anymore info on the area let me know.

FYI. There are four tunnels. The good news is that they are plenty high for any rig to fit under. It was a great ride though from SE Wi up to the campground. 6 hours and 50 minutes in the saddle. Beautiful country up here. We can't wait to do some sight seeing tomorrow.

I recommend you get yourself a good App like Allstays Camp & RV for IPhone or IPad. It's not expensive. According to Allstays, there are no tunnels on Minn 61 between Duluth & Two Harbors.
Now if you get off of 61, there are a couple of 9 foot tunnels on connector roads just after I-35 ends and 61 begins.
Interstates will (almost) always be safe as trucks are legal at 13'6". It an underpass on the interstate is below 14', you can expect all kinds of warnings & signage. Once off the interstate, you must be much more careful.
Another good source is the Rand McNally Truck Atlas that you can get at truckstops. I like IPhone apps better but if you are not into techy things, get yourself a good atlas.

The tunnels are on 35 between 7th street and 13th. Next time we stop for fuel I will look for a good atlas. Do they give bridge heights in the atlas? If so I may go that route. I have a iPhone but it's thru the company I work for. If it was my personal phone I would probably go with the Allstays.

I think Allstay app will only post low clearances. If it doesn't have restrictions they don' list it.

Glad you made it okay, have a great time seeing the sights.
Those were downtown Duluth, right? I remember those now, just long overpass's. Might of forgotten them, but knew we did not encounter anything so low we couldn't get under them with the Lacrosse.
Again enjoy the sights. Check out Gooseberry Falls State Park and the lighthouse North of Two Harbors.
