If you have extra time, dropping down to Galveston could be fun.

Otherwise, the place I've stayed along this route is Breaux Bridge, LA. We stayed at Pioneer Acadia Village but it may be closed now. When we drove by a couple of months ago, it looked open.

We also stayed at Poches RV & Fish Camp. I'd happily go back there. Depending on your site- it could be decently sized and they were all close to their ponds for fishing. Not bad backing in but only 2 or 3 pull-thru sites.

Doug:
Sorry no extra time it's beat feet back to rally in Al. Thanks for the cg tip however this not the route we are looking as I 10 seems rough so a more northern route more feasible. Later RJD

If it was me I'd probably cut across Texas on 79 and pickup 20 near Shreveport.

A good part of 35 is under construction between Waco and Austin. Temple is horrible.

And they have some great Cajun meats and seasonings in their market!

About any way you look, it is almost 1,000 miles. I plan to go north through Austin and up to I-20. A three day tow.

I-10 from Lafayette to the Atchafalaya is rough, a lot of roadwork going on.

Well one of the routes we are looking at is to take highway 79 just north of Austin and head to Kilgore picking up I 20. We will be doing the trip in 3 days. Route is around 940 miles. Forgot 5er-Tom your welcome to travel with our group. Later RJD

If you are going up to I-20, you might consider avoiding I-35 altogether., It is horrible. Look at your paper map, and plot a route from Kerrville, to Johnson City (On 16) , and join 281, going north until you can cut across on 84 to 31 on the other side of Waco to Tyler TX, and join I20 to all points east. You avoid all large cities, all that bad I-35 traffic and construction, and still have good roads to make time on, passing though nice towns and with low traffic.
We live in Kerrville, and travel to Birmingham AL frequently. This is the best route so far after experimenting with all of them.

Hwy 31 from Waco to Tyler or Kilgore is a good option. It is 4 lane the entire way except for a ten mile section just out of Waco. Navarro Mills Lake has some nice COE campgrounds just before you get to Corsicana, plus several commercial campgrounds along the route.

I think it is good, although I believe there is road construction south of Waco. I've not been there in a couple of years, perhaps others can give you an update.

You may have taken your trip by now, but if not here are some ideas. We were in Gadsden last week and will be in Kerrville tomorrow, so have just done your trip in reverse. I agree that US 79 would be a good way to go from Kerrville to I-20. In Gadsden, we stayed at a wonderful city park campground called Noccalula Falls. We had beautiful weather there, but cold and raining in LA and TX.

Did you go that route back on 79? Our trip is for October doing rallys. Did you have any cg you stayed at on the way back? Later RJD

Sorry to leave your question unanswered for so long, but we just got home yesterday from Kerrville and didn't have WiFi most of that time (we stayed in city and state parks without WiFi or cable TV).

Depending on how far you drive each day, a great place to stay is DiamondJack's Casino RV Park in Bossier City (Shreveport), LA. It has shaded, paved RV sites with 30/50A and FHUs for a Good Sam price of $22.50 on weeknights. It even has a laundry!

Also highly recommend taking I-459 around Birmingham, AL, as traffic through town can get pretty heavy. It joins I-59 on the NE side of the city, then takes you right into Gadsden.
