Looking for National Park visit ideas

Planning on a first visit to the north, central states - places we just flew over during our working years. Since we haven't seen any parks north of Kansas and Colorado, all are open but we want to avoid those that are so overcrowded that we couldn't really enjoy the visit. We'd enjoy lesser known, out of the way places. Any suggestions where to go or where to avoid on this trip?

We live in central Texas, it's always 500 miles or more for us to get out of the state. My suggestion is to go to the National Park Service websites. You would probably have to go through them to make reservations anyway.

I know you said you don't want the "popular" type destinations for fear of over crowding. I'm sure there are some out there, but if they aren't getting a steady flow of visitors there may be a reason.

Maybe you're saving Yellowstone, but it's north of Colorado. We've been to Yellowstone and it's so large, unless you're staying a month you won't see it all. On our way back from YS we went through South Dakota then down through Nebraska and so on back to Texas. I'm sure there's something to do in Nebraska, but WOW! the highway we took back cut through 100s of miles of nothing upon nothing.

Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming is worth a visit and Colorado National Monument in western Colorado is quite beautiful too. Sinks Canyon State Park in Wyoming is worth a drive through too.

Pipestone National Park

Pipestone Natioal Park at Pipestone MN is a small park preserving Native American history, a sacred area where all tribes came to get material for their pipes. A campground near the entrance. Have a good trip.

In the fall of 2015, we made a big loop from Denver through NE, SD, ND, and southern SK to the crystal-clear waters in Riding Mtn. National Park in MB and incredibly scenic Lake of the Woods in SW ON. From International Falls, we visited Voyageurs NP and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in MN, but skipped nearby Isle Royale NP due to heavy rains. Then we toured the southern shore of Lake Superior, including the Apostle Islands and Pictured Cliffs National Lakeshores. On the Keeweenaw Peninsula, we stayed at Ft. Wilkins State Park and explored the fascinating, picturesque copper country coastline and lighthouses. On the way home from MI's Upper Peninsula, we stopped in Hannibal, MO to visit the Mark Twain house and museums and then St. Joseph's Pony Express Museum.

At that time of year, we had some of those parks and campgrounds almost to ourselves. We were the only overnight guests at one commercial RV park on the shore of Rainy Lake near Voyager's NP. So, we sat in lawn chairs with a glass of wine on "our" private beach watching a thunderstorm across the border in Canada followed by one of the most gorgeous sunsets we have ever seen! While not everything we visited was a national park or monument, it was still a wonderful trip with fall colors, incredible wildlife and scenery, and, except near isle Royale, great weather.

Devils Tower is a must. The Badlands in either North or South Dakota a good stop. Dinosaur National Monument on the CO/UT border was relaxing.
