need a recomendation for a state park in Colorado near some old mining towns

Planning next summer trip. Going for a week. want to spend at least a few nights somewhere close to an old mining town that we can explore by day.

We spent some time in Manitou Springs summer before last and loved it. However, the private campgrounds were all very small and did not offer much in the way of nature.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Try Mueller State Park just outside of Divide, Colorado. Sites #1 through #5 are the best if you want a little open meadow area. The rest of the sites are pretty heavily wooded. Lots of trails and walk-in only lakes to fish.

As far as old mining towns go, Cripple Creek and Victor are just a few miles south of Mueller.

The Florissant Fossil Beds and Monument are also fairly close by.

There is also a Wolf Reserve just outside of Divide that gives tours. Great place if you have an interest.

And if you are just looking to have a good old fashioned country meal with a shake, try Mildred's Cafe in Cascade.

Leadville Colorado is a great little mining town to explore. They have a
paved walking path around much of the town with interpretive signs at
many of the old mines. Also they have a totally neat scenic train ride.
Consider camping at Turquoise lake. Here is a link-

San Isabel National Forest Campgrounds

Here we are at the lake- it really was like being in a picture post card!
These 2 lake views were from just below our camp site at Baby Doe
camp ground. It was virtually empty in week and full on weekends.
Reservations suggested.

Here is a link to a little 10 second video taken from the Leadville train.
It is a wonderful ride. Don't miss it.
You'll need to download the file and view it with either windows media
viewer or quick time player. I think windows media player does a
better job.

We'll go back to Leadville one day!

Oh wow - those places look awesome. Really love those pictures of Turquoise Lake. Were looking at these when we picked up the new trailer, reminds me, need to change my signature.

Anyway - as soon as we can book, we are planning to go there.
