Route from Ardmore to Abilene

Leaving our spring and summer in the midwest and heading back home to Texas in September but want to avoid the same old routes and want to visit over toward Abilene for a few days and then to Boerne to visit son and other folks.

I was looking at 51 out of Gainesville to 312 then on 20 to Abilene then 83 down to Junction and I-10 to Boerne. Any one have knowledge of this route or other recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dave

Be aware that I20 thru Bossier City and Shreveport, LA is extremely rough. I220 is somewhat better but not by much. I220 is also much less congested. Best fuel stops are just west of Shreveport.

I think he meant Gainesville, TX, not FL.

Yes we are. From Gainesville TX. But it looks like, at least for now, that the thread is quiet.

Maybe get more responses this weekend.

With all the folks on this forum, especially all the rv'ers from Texas, there isn't one or two folks from that side of the state that has knowledge of the highways I mentioned in the thread starter??

I haven’t taken the 51 / 312 run, so I’ve no recommendations there. I20 is a familiar run for me to Abilene, a good road. You’re wise to take 83 on your run to Boerne. 84 and 283 are main runs to Austin and thus very busy. If you like history you might detour 83 at 29E and take in Ft. Mason in Mason, Texas. It’s part of the Texas Fort Trails. For more info go to texasfortstrail.com. If you decide to go through Junction, be sure to stop at Lums BBQ, you won’t regret it. If you’ve never visited Fredericksburg, Texas, it’s worth at least a day, probably two – great WWII museum dedicated to the pacific theater (Admiral Nimitz was a native of Fredericksburg), German cultural influence, and many, many vineyards (with wine tours). If you’re on I10, take 290E at exit 476. If you take the Mason route, it’s 87S out of town. Make a stop in Comfort, Texas on the way to Boerne – a quaint little town with arts and crafts. As always, when traveling in Texas (and now Alabama and Florida) a Bucee’s visit along the way is mandatory.

Thank you for your response. We have been to F-Burg when son lived there and also stayed in Junction some years back. Haven't been to Mason or over that way since I pulled for Air-Gas in the 2000's. Thanks again.
