We rented a 4 wheeler for the day out of Hill City. Did Needless Hwy Custer Park wildlife bloop and up to Mt Rushmore. Had a blast, a great way to see the scenery

mekkric, don't miss the Crazy Horse laser light show at night. We stayed at Big Pine, great couple own it, and after a day of seeing the sights in the area, might have been our Mt. Rushmore day, we went back to the campground, made dinner, and some wine and relaxed, and went back to Crazy Horse, its only 10-15 minutes away, around 9 PM to see the show. Save your entrance ticket from your earlier visit and they'll honor it to let you back in a no charge.

Also, many tourists go to Custer SP to see the Buffalo, or Bison, herd. We chased them around during early afternoon one day but they were gone into the hills and we only saw a few from pretty far away. So, one moring we got up at 6 AM, took our coffee with us and hit Custer SP, less than 5 miles from Big Pine. A mile or two into the park, 100's of buffalo's were walking right down the main park road. We followed them for about a half hour. Don't miss them if you get the chance.

Be sure to ride the steam engine train from Hill City to Keystone and back. We were in Rapid City the week after the Sturgis Rally and there were a lot of bikes everywhere but it was not a problem. We stayed in the area for 6 days and still didn’t get to do all we wanted to.

seeing wildlife in Custer SP

We've been to the black hills twice and love to see the wildlife. The first trip we went out of an evening to see buffalo, etc. and saw a few but not many. The second trip we made a point of getting up early the second day to see wildlife and saw 100's of buffalo, saw pronghorn and burros, deer, turkey. We went another morning and same story - lots of wildlife. We went out 2 evenings also and saw very little wildlife (mostly deer and a very few bison). I strongly recommend going in the morning to see wildlife (we didn't even go that early - 8am one morning). In my experience we saw way more animals in the morning, plus you're not racing the sun, trying to get around before it gets dark.

Advisor -- are there off road trails etc to take? As opposed to the regular roads around the area?
When we were in Ouray, CO on our 2018 trip West, we rented a six seater and made it a few hundred yards from the top of Imogene Pass, but had to turn back due to a rain/hail storm that rolled in without notice!
