Texas is a big state with many different things to do in each city. What are you looking to do and see?

There is Rockport which has goose island with sites right on the water. Great fishing if you want to saltwater fish. I have never stayed at Padre Palms which is in Corpus Christi but very close to attractions in the city. The museum, the Aquarium, and best of all the USS Lexington.

I would make reservations now if you are planning to stay at any park during the summer. We made ours for Jamaica Beach in Galveston two months ago.

South Padre Island has the best beach and it is very nice there. I live in SE Texas and I would not go there in late spring, summer or early fall. It will be way to hot and humid. I go to the UP of MI in the summer.

I second South Padre Island. The KOA there is excellent and within a short walk to the beach. The bar located on the pier adjacent to the KOA gets my stamp of approval.

WEMig makes a very good point both the KOA and bar. Happy Trails

I'll Speak Up For Galveston

Galveston has undergone a regeneration since Hurricane Ike did so much damage nearly five years ago. There are many attractions and campgrounds both on and off the island.

We like Galveston Island State Park, but there are a number of private campgrounds as well. Great restaurants and museums, our favorites are Lone Star Air Museum and the railroad museum. We also enjoy going to shows at the Grand Opera House. Moody Gardens is great. So many good restaurants...can't begin to name them, but Guido's has been there for many years. Schlitterbahn and Pleasure Pier are filled with amusements.

On the mainland Ron Hoover's Oasis RV Resort in LaMarque is a nice park and right next door to their dealership if you have service needs. (We are in the early planning stages for a rally there is late March 2014.) Attractions include Space Center Houston, Kemah Boardwalk, Tanger Outlets, the dog track, San Jacinto Battleground and USS Texas State Park. Many good local restaurants in the area; we love the Monument Inn just past the battleground at the ferry landing. There is also every chain known to humankind.

I'll provide more info if you have specific questions.

If you aren't really into sparkling cities by the sea, the hill country is always a great place. In spring and fall, just about anywhere is nice. In the summer, it is nice to camp by a lake or river so you can cool off in the water. There are a bunch of State Parks and private campgrounds available.

I second the TX State Parks and also The Corps of Engineers Parks If you are 62 or older you are eligible for the Corp Senior Pass and can get 1/2 off your camping and free entry. It' only $10 lifetime. We use ours a lot. For campgrounds, go to recreation.gov .

Since we are resurrecting an old tread.... If you want to visit Enchanted Rock and sleep in your camper, I suggest the Oxford Camp Ranch. They have full RV hookup sites and open camping on the ranch so you can pick a site by one of the ponds. It is about 8 miles south of Llano and 15 miles from E Rock.

Another great spot is Inks Lake State Park. It's a great "lake" for kayaks and canoes and there are lots of hiking trails. We're headed to Tyler State Park this weekend, which also looks great. I'll try to remember to send an update after we return.

We used to camp at Tyler State Park when we lived in Dallas. Really nice place. The kids love the swimming beach.

If you like he river setting, check out Lazy L&L on River Road in New Braunsfels, (Guadalupe River), you can bring your own tube and start on their property and get out around the bend at Devils Playground w/o paying the high tube rental/shuttle fees which can get pretty expensive for a family of 5, a lot of people just go down to the Playground for the day and sit in lawn chairs in the river, we tubed then went back o the trailer to refill (i turned over in the rapids and lost everything except my tube and swimsuit) then spent the rest of the day at the Playground, they have a pavilion and bring in bands in the weekend, one night was great, second night so-so but it's music, I may be partial to this area since my parents live about 5 miles away on Canyon Lake and we visit them and the kids stay there a night or two, we're planning on a few families that we camp with going next summer for a week, we had a blast by ourselves so it should be real fun with fellow campers.
