Headin' south...

...the first week in November we'll be making our way to Long Key State Park down in the beautiful Florida Keys...time for a little fishing, kayaking, beach combing, reading, lounging and mojito sampling Can't wait!

Mammoth cave NP in south central KY.
They have at least a few miles of paved paths and low traffic roads so
biking is nice. Many folks don't realize they also have 1000s of acres
of back country if hiking is your thing.
If you go and it's hot take a cave tour. IF it's not, take a hike!
And it's an easy 100 mile from our home straight down I65.

FYI- the CG is primitive. No hookups but they have heated and AC cooled
toilets in each loop! Makes no sense to me. They just remodeled them
with new AC/heatpump units. But they don't even have electric hookups
in the CG. Still a decent CG and we can easily go 3 days on battery
power. Pay showers at the camp store are decent also.

Actually they do have 2 or 3 sites with electric or full hookups.
I guess those are reserve-able. This time of year the rest are
first come, first served.

This coming weekend!! We have a 7 day trip planned leaving on Friday. Will be dry camping one night at Wheatland Missouri to watch the ASCS Sprint cars on Friday night then on Saturday heading a little further south to Bennett Springs State Park here in Missouri to do some trout fishing for 6 days. This is our annual fall trip to the park and am getting very excited. We leave the kiddo's at home with the inlaws and enjoy a nice, relaxed time doing things at our own pace.

The next 3 days are going to go by so slow!!!!

We are open to suggestions for other stops from and to our way to Northern Mississippi.
We've been to three of your planned stops: Savannah/St Augustine/Destin campgrounds, all are nice in their unique way.

While in Destin, I'd recommend driving through Topsail SP, it's about a 20min drive east of where you'll be...very nice campground and away from tourist area, we'll be there next summer.
Enjoy your trip

today, with daylight and morning rush hour over, we're heading to Lake Somerville, Tx - for a couple of nights - checked it out day before yesterday and was almost empty (hope it isn't filling up for this Holiday[sic] )

saw many Deer while just driving thru on Wednesday and the Lake level is completely normal - will be anxious to see if my fridge is cooling properly.....Bill

The planned trip to Inks Lake SP was rained out last weekend. 4" on Friday night alone, so we camped in the driveway.

Rain in these parts is a real good thing, so we took it in stride and made reservations on Lake LBJ in Marble Falls, TX. for next weekend...

well, I really screwed up this trip !

1st - I didn't realize that this is a long weekend (another postal service workers day off on Monday) so when we got to Lake Somerville SP we were disappointed to see that the sites we'd checked out on Wednesday were occupied - and then, to top it off, the whole park was reserved (didn't realize SPs could take reservations - thought only ya couldn't reserve individual sites)

the gal checked the "other" location and said there were some sites available but I didn't want left-overs so I decided to head on home (a little over 2 hours driving)

2nd - we got only a couple of miles out of the park when a fellow in a pickup truck passed us and flagged us to a stop - said one of the tires on the right side was shreading - sure enough, it was ! So, got that changed and decided to head into Brenham and get 4 new tires at Discount Tire - did that, had lunch there then drove on home

so, camping trip #2, in the new tt with the new truck, turned out to be a big pile of #2 (tho blowing the tire might have been a blessing - now have 4 new ones, the quality of which I'm confident.....Bill

Headed out for the Texas coast around noon today with my 10 year old, the rest of my clan should be here in about 20 minutes. Camp is all set up, I have a cold one in my hand and the weather is beautiful. Cheers!

Southern Tip of Texas, South Padre Island. As you can see the park is deserted, maybe at 20 % capacity. Highs are in the 80's lows in the 70's. The beer is on ice Bill, come on down!
