Thanks for the discussion!

I read them all.
I'm now leaning towards Devil's Lake state park. Given the choice of waking in a crowded "Gatlinburg" kind of area vs walking in the woods to a lake or over look-
we'll choose the woods every time.
Can't rule out a trip in town but this just feels more right to us.

We really appreciate all your suggestions and comments!

You didn't mention if you have children with you. If not, Ho Chunk casino is 15 minutes out of town in Baraboo. If you aren't into gamboling, they have entertainment--mostly older acts.

Mirror Lake SP is another close to the dells as well as Rocky Arbor SP. Many do the water ski show and the upper dells "duck" ride. No shortage of spots for tourists to contribute to the economy

For those interested in the Devils Lake area, there has been several sightings of a cougar. So far no one has been bothered as the cougar doesn't stick around very long. The DNR believes it is a young adult searching for territory to call it's own and may continue out of the area.

The DNR suggest visitors to the area to keep an eye out and if you think you see one do the following suggestions.
  • People hiking in areas where cougars are known to occur are advised to hike in groups, and keep small children in sight.
  • If a cougar approaches and does not immediately flee, stand tall, wave your arms, throw stones or other objects and yell. Don't run, but slowly back away from the site, keeping an eye on the cougar.

If you see one the DNR asks you to go online and report it.
Report a cougar observation

Please use the large mammal observation form.
Email photos to: Jane Wiedenhoeft
or call Maggie Stewart at 608-261-7588.

No sightings in the Devils Lake area has been verified by the DNR and no clear pictures have been submitted yet.

What do YOU do at the Dells.
We're not bringing Kayaks or fishing gear but we love day hikes, pretty scenery, occasional tourist shopping...
If it matters- were staying at Sky High camping resort in Portage WI.

We'll be there 2 full days, 3 nites.

What's your favorite thing about the Dells?
Today the Dells is mostly waterparks. There are still some cool things like the ducks or Tommy Bartlett but most all the other stuff is gone replaced by waterparks. I once took a helicopter tour of the dells. Don't know if that is still around. Around the area there is Devils Lake State Park, or a bit east there is Holy Hill. My kids used to get a kick out of the ferry crossing merrimac ferry a little south of Devils Lake park.

There is Also a quaint little town called Prarie Du Sac a little South.of the Dells that has my favorite winery, Wollersheim Winery.

Just outside town is the headquarters of Culvrs Restaurants.

Take a hike either side of the lake at Devils Lake state park. Great day hike. Also Google for other hikes around Baraboo - some gems tucked away.

Note that there are large vertical drop offs at devils lake. Keep an eye on little ones.

X2 on this. Very slippery after rains as well. But well worth it. Also parfries glen. I think that how you spell it lol. Trails. Walk around downtown area. Salt water taffy. Tons to do but can be expensive if you are not careful. Have fun.
