Battery disconnect question

If I throw the battery disconnect switch, am not plugged into shore power and do not have the engine or generator running, do I still need to disconnect any cables from the top of the batteries to do some water top off maintenance or can I just pull the covers and add distilled water?

Just add the distilled water.
Throwing the switch only stops power after the switch. Batteries still have voltage across terminals. Don't drop any metal object across terminals when the box is open.

Yeah, that makes sense. The disconnect switch does cut off out to devices not in to battery. I'll take a look and top them off tomorrow.

Crap, think I have a bad battery. Pulled the caps on both batteries and one looked fine, just need a touch of water but the other battery, all the cells were extremely low. Filled them with distilled water and I guess I need to let it charge overnight to see. Notice my slide was not its usual self when I ran it yesterday so that prompted this whole thread. Batteries have to be over 2 years olds by now, perhaps it's time to look for better than factory replacements.

Question is why did one run dry???? After filling and charging take it and get it tested if you don't have one. Replace both at same time if it is bad. Will pull down the other if it is not same voltage. Might just want to have them both tested. Should get three yesrs without any problems, depending on the battery. If one went dry I wopuld want to know what was going on there. New may do the same if there is a problem.

Probably never topped off correctly by the dealer during prep. Bought the coach dec 2015 and it's my fault for not looking sooner but 15 months from delivery if they were good when I took delivery...
I also know this RV sat on the lot for about a year before I bought it. If only I get through this weekend of camping I'll be replacing both with something better quality. That whole wall slide just didn't seem to like the lower juice.

No luck getting the slide in this morning. Replaced both batteries and was able to get the slide in ever so slowly. Letting the rig charge now, hoping the new batteries just needed a fresh charge. Otherwise, off to the dealer it must go.

May want to check the terminal lugs, clean with some scotchbrite, look for anything not tight and making good contact,. New batteries should pull in the slide without charging. Follow wiring as much as you can and see if there is any cause for it not getting power to motor. If on shore power and not coming in may be motor problem. I had a slide motor slowing down and the wires had rubbed and shorted near the motor. Guess it was a good thing because the motors were not tight on the shaft and would have messed up where it would be uncomfortable to disassemble. When things go bad it is usually not at a good time. Good Luck!

Lugs are fine found loose connection on top of 1 battery post and both leads connecting to the fuse block behind the batteries were loose,1 was very loose. The other maybe finger tight. [emoji35] now my slide went out okay but when I tried to pull it in the back froze up and shutdown. I'm stuck in my driveway with a 25' wall that won't go back in!

Maybe some information here about manually closing slide that will help you? It is about manually overriding the slide & jacks (if Lippert)

This video is from the Forest River video link page.

Mine is a swintek. Just found the steps to do a manual override from the controller. Can't really get my hand in the track to release the drive motors manually

So did you find this PDF? It has a good bit of troubleshooting information:

Good Luck!

I pulled the whole owners and service manual from their website and also watched the YouTube video explaining the override functions. I did the override from the controller and it worked! Slide is in and the error codes state I have a cable short between the controller and motor #2. Called my dealer and their soonest drop off date was June 3rd and then they say it could take them another week after drop off before they even get it in the shop. [emoji35] I swear I'm going back to a tent!
