Padding on a later rung sets up a slip and fall. JMHO

What about a small pillow zip tied to the rung? Maybe some roll bar padding for a race car? Some of that type padding is high density and firm. It has an SFI rating, where the regular padding is softer and squishes easier, and it’s 4 times cheaper.

I think I have a couple small pieces of both types of padding, maybe I could send them to you so you can see how they feel.

We don't use the factory ladder to access the bunk unless the sofa bed is also pulled out. I bought a 6 ft step ladder at Lowes that I use primarily for activities that need to reach high but it also doubles as a bunk access ladder. It has nice wide comfortable steps and is pretty stable. However, I would not use it for kids as it does not attach to the overhead bunk but for adults it's pretty good.

We "repurposed" a real ladder for the same reason.
