They do this occasionally, because the price to change it is too much.
I had a similar situation on an older GMC pickup I had. The check engine light would come on at weird times, and quickly go out. I took it in and explained to the Service Manager, and he just laughed and told me not to worry about it. I asked why not, and he explained that it was only on California models at that time, and there was no light bulb in that socket. He shined his flash light in the window and it came on. Said it would do it when I drove into thee sun; if it bothered me, just throw a magazine up on the dash.
