Do We purchase an Extended Warranty from RV Wholesalers

Hello Forester/Sunseeker Family~

Headed from WI to OH to order our 2021 3011DSF this weekend. So...Please share your thoughts on buying an Extended Warranty...I would rather save the $5000...AND we are being offered a percentage point less interest rate which actually makes our montly payment $3 less IF we purchase the extended warranty. Which I find rather salesy (is that a word?) We are STILL paying $5000 more for the life of the loan--which I intend to sell or pay off sooner than the life of the loan.

I am not an extended warranty believer...my husband is...He thinks it will bring "peace of mind" as we travel...so we don't get stuck somewhere. RV Wholesalers has told him with their nationwide service network we just call a # and they will help us if it's on the side of the road or at a campsite...

Please share your thoughts...

It depends on the policy and all that fine print.
If it is a Platinum XtraRide policy, it is well worth it. You can use it anywhere, is as close to a bumper to bumper policy as there is, and you don't have to prove yearly maint and inspection. Also the small deductible (ours was $50), is per complete claim, not every individual fix.
We used ours all over the country with great success and it definitely paid for itself in the five year coverage.
We are not usually extended warranty people, but a friend had good experiences with his XtraRide, so we tried it on our current rig, which has much more expensive options and equipment on it than anything we had previously.
Good luck and happy RVing!

Yep... read the fine print. Don't believe what the dealer tells you... read the fine print! There have been some nightmare stories about coverage.

Extended warranties are insurance policies and you assume the risk of paying for it and never using it -vs- having a breakdown where the cost of the repair would have paid for the warranty.

Regardless... offering a lower interest rate on the loan in exchange for buying an extended warranty is a sales tactic. And, ESPs are BIG money makers for the dealer.

You have to determine if these conditions are right for you.

When we bought our CC 33ik we got the extended warranty just cuz there is so much high tech stuff to break. If I don't use it oh well.

Extended warranty = insurance

Very few people get back the cost of the policy in repairs. That is how warranty companies stay in business, they charge more than they pay.

You would be better off banking the cost of the policy and using it for future repairs. Remember the deductibles can kill you and when you use your repair fund think that there would have been a deductible on top of the repair costs so put the deductible you would have paid back into the repair fund.

I got a second year Forest River factory policy for $100. They don't do this anymore. Never used the second year for repairs. Just my experience.

It seems high. Go directly to Wholesale Warranties instead and get a quote. They have "exclusionary" extended service contracts, which means they list what they do NOT cover. Everything else is covered to some extent. This is who we used:

Buddy Hooker
Warranty Specialist
Wholesale Warranties
(858) 737-6140, Direct
800.939.2806, Toll Free

We were quoted just over $5,000 for 7 years of their coverage on a new motorhome, which is why I think your price is high.

You seem to be talking about two different coverages, though: roadside assistance and an extended service contract (none are "warranties").

Roadside assistance can get you someone to do on-the-road repairs but you pay for the parts. An extended service contract can get you partial or total parts reimbursement.

Be darn certain you know exactly what you're considering buying. If they gave you a sample contract feel free to attach it here and people will give you a good critique. If they did not give you a sample, ask for it and then attach it.

We ultimately decided to not buy because many of the components will carry a multi-year warranty for parts from the actual component manufacturer. With a new motorhome, we were very, very persistent in getting everything fixed under warranty.

We did, however, buy the "road hazard" Wheel and Tire policy from Wholesale Warranties. The price for seven years was about the same as the price of just one motorhome tire. If I never have a tire fail, well, I'm actually OK with that.

HTH,

Ray

When we purchased from RV Wholesalers back in 2011 we purchased an extended warranty that was suppose to refund us the cost of the warranty if we had no claims in 3 years (may have been 5) We had no claims but when we went to get our refund said warranty company had gone belly up. I typically don't get extended warranties but along with this offer the finance company reduced our rate a half of a percentage point. That one hurt. Not telling you that you should or shouldn't but wanted to share our experience.
On another note our dealings with RVW was nothing but good.

Beware of what is covered

We also purchased our RV trailer from RVWholesalers, and, like you, had mixed feelings about purchasing the add on warranty. We we asked why we needed this warranty when there was already manufacturer's warranty, we were told that this would cover problems that might arise even if the problem was caused by a self administered mistake, like spilling grape juice on the new couch. Ironically, my wife asked if she accidentally did something to damage the slide, would it be covered. "Absolutely," we were told. On our first trip, at our first camping site, we set up our new camper, and my wife pushed the button to open the slide, forgetting that she had placed the slide lock in place. Luckily, the person who did the walk-thru demonstration never showed us the correct way to install the lock, and my wife simply laid it behind the front panel. When she opened the slide, she could hear sounds that were not good, and I was outside (in a rainstorm) watching, to make sure it was working as it should. Part of the rubber membrane was damaged but there was no structural damage, thank goodness. We called RVWholesalers when we returned from our trip and took our camper to their place of business, only to find that fixing the rubber membrane was not covered. When we explained the promises made, we were told that their employee would never make promises like that. In hind sight, I wish we would have recorded the conversation. We still have the extended warranty, but certainly would not spend the extra bucks knowing what we do now.

I had the same good experience with XtraRide Platinum that Scott mentions. I paid $1800 for a 5-year contract with a $100 per incident deductible. It paid out $4200 for two fairly significant claims - the last of which was approved just days before the contract expired and was paid several days after.

When people advise putting the money in the bank and using it for repairs, I usually ask "Did you do that?" and usually the answer is NO.

My opinion is keep the money.
Our first Rockwood I was able to repair the minor issues. Nothing serious ever happened.
Just purchased Rockwood #2 fro RV Wholesalers in Ohio and did decline the extended warranty.
Surprising enough the sales rep handling the warranties was not pushy at all!
I do have AAA roadside TT coverage as a back up for tires and towing if needed.

Warranty is Absolutely worth it!

Yes we purchased a 10 year old Newmar Ventana 3961 and purchased a four year United States warranty, extended warranty with $100 deductible. We have found it to be extremely useful for $929 mean Slater motor went out and it was $100 deductible for the labor and parts included! We also had a leaky transmission pan in an air-conditioning fan both recovered with $100 deductible what a wonderful peace of mind, and it is so easy for the service centers to simply call, and get the warranty service approved. Buy it you will not regret it!!!! And I’ll bet 90% of the people who don’t buy it, don’t put that money in the bank as a back up! We really are glad we purchased the warranty!

OK don’t do it!

but we did it, and for our $2500 premium we paid, we’ve gotten far more than we ever paid already in service!!!

I have never purchased one and never needed one. Most things are reparable by the average handyman with some experience with youtube.
$ 5000 is a pretty healthy chunk of change. Is that for bumper to bumper coverage including the Ford chassis? You msy want to look into a chassis warranty. I get mine from Ziegler Ford. They offer discounts.

First thing DON'T DO IT AT THE DEALERSHIP!
Now that is settled decide how handy you are. Really handy, don't do it.
The sales guy will tell you that low price is only good today. Big lie!
Your unit will have a warranty. When it runs out do some research about warranty companies, you will get hosed going thru the dealerships. They just mark it up and pass along the savings to you.
There are mobile RV mechanics everywhere. Most of the appliances have longer warranties than the RV itself. The mobile guys can fix or repair them under that warranty and that's what goes wrong 75 percent of the time.
Enjoy your new RV.

Just to expand on one thing Ray said above...
The factory warranty is NOT like a car/truck warranty. It covers only the things that Forest River added themselves. The components (air conditioner, water heater, furnace, converter, TV, A/V system, control panel, wheels, tires, frame(!), doors, windows, steps, etc.) are covered by their individual manufacturers.

If you go to Forest River or the dealer, even in the first year, with a problem, they may help or may argue with you, but if you contact the component manufacturer, they will help you, no questions asked. Always contact the component manufacturer first.

Many of those components are warrantied for two, three, or even five years. And better yet, many of the manufacturers will replace their components after the warranty has expired if it's an obvious defect. We read about such things every week on this forum.

Understanding this is important in making the extended warranty decision.

RV Wholesalers and RV Nation have good extended warranties. Bought from both of them and got the extended warranty and used them. They work and no hassle. You will need to have repairs, these units are built like cars were back in the 60's. They will break down.

Put that amount of money in the bank and leave it there. Based on the percentages of the extended service contract, statistically you're unlikely to ever use it, or at least not use it to the extent of the cost.
1. Service companies make their money by NOT paying claims.
2. These are not warrantees, so they bypass the laws in some states.
3. They decide how much a repair costs, NOT the dealer or repair facility.
4. If a repair comes in over the allowable amount, which it often does, guess who pays the difference - you. There is no detailed "Chilton's Motor Manual" for RVs that will give you an accurate cost. Therefore, the repair facility can pretty much charge what they feel like charging, within reason.
5. As someone already mentioned, read the fine print! You just might be surprised about what is NOT covered. "Fair wear and tear" is their determination, not yours.
Yes, you'll hear the horror stories now and then as above, but statistically you're better off not buying it IF you base your decision on cost comparison. However, there is one very important fact it is called "cost benefit analysis". It is the impact of something expensive if it did happen. To counter this statistical factoid, you keeping the equivalent amount of money in the bank significantly reduces this potential cost factor.
Lastly, it is likely that repairs are going to tie up your RV for weeks if not months. (Yes, that's a fact.) A dealer has little or no incentive to get you out on time. That's how they level their workload to keep a steady workforce in place. Keep in mind that independent repair facilities are often much less and are incentivized to get you out the door whereas a dealer is not.
If you have moderate DIY skills, you can save a lot of time in the dealer's shop by ordering the parts and doing it yourself. This forum and YouTube videos will give you tons of step-by-step how-to videos.
Happy camping!

Use a comparison of an Extended Car Warranty to an Extended RV Warranty.

Would You or Have You bought an Extended Car Warranty?
If the answer is "NO" then I think you answered your own question regarding an Extended RV Warranty.

In my opinion, extended warranties are just sales gimmicks so the salesman can make extra money.
I bought an extended car warranty once in my life and vowed never to get sucked in again for any extended warranty including for my home.
