Eternabond roof taping..

I'm going to type my RV roof... seams & around all roof assessories... with EyernaBond Tape. I see EternaPrime spray adhesive is an additional option for better long term adhesion. Is this spray necessary?... Does it really make a difference?
The spray is $30/can and an additional step in the process, so I would appreciate comments from anyone with experience.
Thanks.

As with most adhesive products, prep work including detailed cleaning is key to it’s performance. Lots of discussions have stated you should clean with isopropyl alcohol for Eternabond to seal properly.

I suspect you’d find this EternaPrime has this as an active ingredient, and helps with sales, but I’ve never seen it in person to read the label.

I do know that the discussion about Eternabond has been going on for as long as there’s been RV roofs, and I’m sure others will chime in.

I Eternabond-ed the entire roof of my MiniLite early in the third year I owned it. I did not use the spray you are talking about and all of the tape was still in great shape when I sold it last fall - - well after seven years of use and several cross-country trips.

I did use Dicor self-leveling caulk at all of the leading edges, though. Might not have been needed but it gave me just that little bit more peace-of-mind that 60-65 mph wind (highway speeds) would not get under it and pull it off. Strong wind can do some serious damage - - just look at some of the hurricane damage photos.

I plan on doing my new trailer this spring. Won't bother with the adhesive.

Thanks for the insight & and info. Most things I have read says..."Clean roof well, place tape and really roller stick down." Think I'll forego the spray adhesive.

Eternabond tape is very very sticky. Once properly applied it doesn't come back off easily. I see no need for extra spray.

My Eternabond tape went on the roof in 2005 and is still perfect but the recommended $30 can of spray adhesive is too minor a expense to even think about.

I cleaned with alcohol and put down the tape. It doesn't need help to stick, it's incredibly sticky as is..

Maybe

I used some to remove black/green/red mold which isopropyl alcohol would not clean. I also used it to remove silicone residue which eternabond tape did not adhere to well.

That said, I feel it is unnecessary in most instances where the surface is clean and prepped with an isopropyl wipe down.

Note: This is cleaner and not prime.

Eternabond Tape

Type EternaBond Tape in the search bar above and you will get hours and hours and hours of reading.

Also YouTube has many videos of EternaBond Tape application.

Hope this helps...

I have posted about my Eternabond experiences twice over the years

GOOD DECISION with or without the added spray... just pick a warm DAY and not a HOT day

I didn't use spray and it was still stuck several years later when I replaced the roof. Cleaned with alcohol and something else that EB recommended cleaning.

Tip- get a good roller and use knee pads.

The roller I used is not available now, but was heavy and smooth:

Did mine 2 years ago without the spray. Cleaned good with alcohol prior to using the tape and have had no issues whatsoever. As good as that stuff sticks, IMO the spray is a waste of money. Be careful using the tape…if you accidentally stick it to something unintended, it is real tough to get off.

I'm a big fan of Eternabond. When applied properly it will last 20+ years. DO NOT buy the knockoff brands as they are crappy--stick with the real stuff. As far as the cleaner and primer, I found it worth it. Although expensive, the Eternaclean will prep the surface properly. It is hard to find but I came across one company that has some.

Now half way through the roof taping process. Have had only one afternoon of good weather since first posting. It has been ultra cold or raining every day since. The afternoon I was able to work, all went well until dusk when the dew fell. I could not keep the roof surface dry and the last piece of Eternabond would not stick.... learned a good lesson. Work on a warm dry day!!!
I will resume work when weather permits!

See the MSDS.
