I have a call in to Lippert. I will let you know what I hear, or your next step would also be to call them. Let me know what you hear and I will do the same. Alan

Here is what they told me. If I send the information they will send a new unit. I will get this to them this afternoon. Go for it!

I will need the following information.

Full vin number
Date of manufacture
Date of purchase
Make/Model
A picture of the panel showing the 17 hours
A shipping address

Lippert is sending me a new generator genie to install so it will show the correct number of hours. Does anyone know how difficult this is to install? Others have said it isn't any problem.

I am the one KalyleysMom referenced. I had the exact same issue. Lippert sent me the module. The generator genie swap out took 5 minutes and immediately resolved the issue. Very simple process requiring the removal of 7 screws and 3 connectors.

That's good news. Do the directions come with the module?

No directions included.

Here you go.
1- Turn off the battery disconnect switch.

2- Remove the wooden panel above the battery disconnect switch in the entry stairs. 6 #2 square drive screws.

3- the generator genie will be screwed (typically 1 screw) behind the panel you removed, buried under many wires.

4- Remove its attachment screw(s).

5- Disconnect the connectors from the generator genie. The 2 CAN bus cables have the same connector, it does don't matter which connector that you reconnect them to. The other connecters will only fit their respective mates.

6- Reconnect cables to the replacement GG.

7- Reattach module.

8- Turn on the battery disconnect and test. Keep in mind the generator has to run six minutes for the hour meter to increase each step.

Good luck

There is no wooden panel with screws above my cut off switch in the area you indicated. I have a pantry in that location. Could the location have changed? I'm wondering if it could be behind the touch pad above the refrigerator. Any suggestions where to look?

Not being familiar with the 3171 from pictures it appears there is a removable panel below the fridge. Take a look under there. Typically it will be in close proximity to the house batteries.

Received an email from FR Customer Service yesterday and they said the controls are located behind the touch screen. I had the Genie sent to my primary residence and will be leaving for there Sunday. The part has already been delivered and picked up by a neighbor. Your installation directions will be helpful. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your help. I finally found the old Genie - it was behind a panel in the small pantry above the refrigerator. Swapped them out and the new one seeks to be working. Thanks for your assistance. As you said, it was an easy swap out.

Thanks to all in this thread because I am no longer in the 17 hour club with my new Forester.

I called Lippert last week and my new generator genie arrived today. Installation took an easy five minutes and all is good again. (At least with this one issue.)

I changed our 17 hour generator genie in our 2017 forester. It was about as hard as changing a light bulb. 4 easy plugs to connect and two screws to fasten the unit to the panel on which it was mounted

Thanks, but...

As a side note, where the heck is Forest River QA? Since this is such an easy fix, why wasn't it checked and resolved during the build process?
My new 3011 DS is on order for delivery real soon.
