Hey Ford E450 owners!

We take possession of a new to us 2018 Sunseeker at the end of the month.

Has anyone addressed the wide open area circled in the photo attached?
I can’t believe Ford leaves it this open REGARDLESS of what will be attached to the cutaway cab. Seems to be just asking for trouble from road debris into the radiator and cooling fins.

Even the main grill seems to be rather open, but it does have a bit more grill work.

Am I the only one concerned here?

I put a billet grill in mine just to change the look. All the front openings look the same now. But, to answer your question, that is not a problem being open. There are thousands like that and I never heard of a problem.

I guess I don't understand your concern?
What do you believe is going to jump up off the road and cause damage?

Road debris is stones, rocks, tire chunks off trucks especially, etc etc.
Lots of people have stone chips, cracks and broken windshields.
Look carefully at the lead edge of your vehicle and witness the chips in your paint, grill and mirrors.
It’s nasty out there.

I thought PA roads were the worst but I guess Canada has us beat.

3 years on my current F-250 and not a single stone chip in the leading edge of the hood, grill, bumper or mirrors and it is a daily driver used in winter months as well. I will consider myself lucky!

I wouldn't block that opening, there is an air dam behind that pushing air up to the trans cooler I think.

That’s where I mounted the air horns. Wide open area let’s them know I’m coming!

Canadian reply

I've been driving my E450 for 5 years now up in the Great White North and never had an issue with that opening.

I've seen dealer demo videos that advertise that opening as a foothold to step up on to assist while cleaning windshield etc.

Thousands ( probably hundreds of thousands) of those rigs out there and I never heard of any issues. The more air flow the better IMO.

As others have stated, never really heard of any disasters cause from the opening being there. Great place to put my shoes when I am cleaning bugs off the windshield that you can't otherwise reach.

Make sure to aim it down to the road. Those things are blinding when not installed properly.

My RV dealer, at motorhome PDI, suggested that grill hole could be used as a step for windshield access. I was very annoyed when he stood on my new bumper to demonstrate.

The hole appears to be for air flow, and at first I didn’t see anything fragile in there that could be damaged, but on further inspection I see the lower section of the A/C condenser is visible through that hole. It is set a ways back, but I guess a rock could hit the condenser.
