How do you pay for gas
Read an article yesterday in RVTravel that said that when you pay for gas with a Debit/credit card or a regular credit card the station holds the transaction for a day. Could have several hundred dollars tied up for a couple days. How do most of you guys pay for your gas. Thanks for the input.

I use gasoline company credit cards or prepaid gas cards. Publix, our local grocery store, periodically sells $50 prepaid national brand gas cards for $40 with a $50 grocery purchase. I'm buying groceries anyway so I'll gladly buy Shell cards at a 20% discount...

Every trip we take goes on a credit card, this way any unapproved transaction can be fought easily, bill paid at the end of the month.

I try to use the Pilot/Flying J cards exclusively when we're on the road - typically get a nickel per gallon discount. Each month we get an electronic statement pay the balance from our checking account. It's worked really well for nearly three years now......

I use a credit card, I will not use my debt card. The reason is if someone puts a readed on the pump they can drain your account with the debt card no recourse at all. If they have a reader and I use a credit card I can dispute anything on it and it's not tied to my bank account. I do not have to pay the credit card back if it becomes compromised. My credit card gets compromised once a year. Never had to pay for the use. Also my bank keeps tract and if something weird comes up they freeze it until I call them after being notified.

Usually with a Walmart credit card with 5˘ off per gallon. Was 15˘ off per gallon for several months until prices came down. Paid 2.26 per gallon today. When not at Walmart I use Visa.

credit card always...
you can set alerts online with your online bank to alert your mobile txt number (instant) or email for transactions exceeding any dollar amount that you set... alerting you instantly if your credit card number has been hacked or stolen
my limit is $75 or more... I always get a txt when buying groceries and exceeding that amount as I am walking out of the store, giving me peace of mind that the system to protect my card from fraud is working

Gas purchase
I use a Amex from Costco, get 4%per gallon rebate up to $8,000 annually. If I am at home I get gas at Costco, get another 2% rebate. On the road I generally use Flying J for another 4% off. Of course I pay them off every month.

I think when you scan a card at the pump the pump requests a initial payment for the maximum you can pay at the pump for using that card. This is based on the cards set limits, usually $75 to $125. When the transaction is finalized it reverts to the actual amount pumped. This is a problem with debit cards because it will freeze that amount and it will not be available until finalized and for some reason sometimes it ca take days ti finalize and you wouldn't have access to those funds.
I always use credit cards. Check rates and use Pilot Flying J to get additional $0.03 per gallon and just got a Sam's credit card that gives 5% back on gas.

Always use a credit card. I recently had a minimart put a $99 hold on the account until they submitted the correct amount then it was corrected but it was there for over 24hrs. If that was a debit card it might put a dent in your reserves. The other thing you should do is let your credit card(s) issuer know that you will be traveling out of state or out of your normal purchasing area so they don't deny the charges. Just a simple phone call to the 800 number on the back, they appreciate knowing it. Some issuers don't care but if you have a Discover card (know from experience) or American Express (don't have one) they certainly want to know. Visa and MC are a little more lax unless it is a large charge. Also, if you use a credit card vs. a debit card if there is a dispute our money is not tied up until the dispute is resolved.

I use a wex gas card. It can be used in over 100 different gas stations across the us and Canada. And has a $5000 credit limit. This way I can price shop for best fuel price. you also can get the different stations awards offered.

I have a small account which I think how much I will need, and that no one can dip into our regular bank account.

Credit Card only - never ever Debit.
I had my CC compromised more than once at a gas station (once by the cashier) where the bank locked my card (MC) and called me - even in the middle of the night. They even call when I use my card for unusual transactions or in not (for me at least) common locations. I apparently bought 7 iphones last week, got a phone call at 10:30pm and the charges were immediately reversed. Peace of mind - priceless.
When your debit card gets skimmed you're screwed big time, that money is gone for good.
The only drawback is, you never want to miss a payment once.

Good info! We never have gotten a debit card and this just reinforces why.

We actually had two banks when I was working several years ago but when I retired I consolidated all of my accounts to one bank. But the one bank that we use for home is a local bank and does not have office outside of our state. So I kept the second account, in a national bank, open, and we just put money into it when we can. I also had a credit card from this bank that I kept just for travel purposes. So I do not use my home bank for travelling so that I know none of my purchases will affect my ability to pay my monthly bills. I also have alerts setup on both banks so that I am aware of any charges over the $75.00 limit. I have used Wal-Mart when they are available. I have a gift card that I can use and then move more money on it as it is needed. I find that this helps and so far we have not had any problems. I never us my debit card while away from home. I always use a credit card. I have a Pilot gas card but so far have not used it. I normally find diesel cheaper at other stations than at Pilot.
