How stale do you accept to buy your tires?

Today, I got new rubber as part of my recent modifications. Checking their date of birth, and it is the week of April 10, 2022. That is 15 months ago. How fresh do you want your tires to be when buying them?

I’d want them built a month ago but I guess I could accept 15 months if it’s a tire with low sales volume.

If for your RV I wouldn't want 15 month old tires. Mainly because the tires will age out before they ware out.

Now for my car or truck that I put more miles on, it's not that big of a deal.

I hear you

I can not see a DOT year designation on both my Hankook or Copper like the one I posted for my new tires! See attached the info on my OEM Hankook tires for my 2018 Sunseeker. Am I reading this right?? Born 2012!? What is yours and what year is your model?

You have what is called the partial DOT on the sidewall you took the pic of. Go look on the other/opposite side of the tire and it will have the full DOT with date code.

That’s about as far as I’d go. Assuming they were stored properly (indoors, mostly) they’re almost certainly fine. When I buy tires I always ask for them to be under 6 months but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Thx for the info. Another new thing to learn about tires. Your advice worked in the Cooper tire. See attached. Born at COOPER TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY FINDLAY, OHIO 01/21. It was only 2 months old when I bought it. Unfortunately, it is the same issue for the OEM Hankook. No date. Third photo taken from the other side. Can anyone take the trouble to look at their tire and tell me if I am missing something?

For ST tires, I tell my tire guy date has to be less than 3 months if possible. So far, not a problem.....
LT tires, maybe 6 months.
15 months, I would not have accepted them.....

If your dealer cant get tires less than a couple months old, switch dealers. You don’t buy stale bread do you?

To make sure you’re seeing proper side of your tire……..

The complete date code on a tire will be ON ONE SIDE ONLY with the pattern

DOT XXXX XXXX and the final pattern is 4 digits inside an oval circle surrounding those 4 digits.

The first 2 digits tell what WEEK of the year the tire was made.
The last 2 digits tell what YEAR the tire was made.

I've been known to have this effect on some people, but no one gave me an award for it until you came along. Mostly vacant stares and eye-rolling is what I get. So, is it gold-plated?

I checked both sides for the Hankook and took the photos I posted, Ken. Both are missing the week and year, which I located and posted for the Cooper and Yokohama.

Is that picture of the opposite sidewall from your front or rear tire? The reason I ask is I want to make sure you took a pic of the opposite sidewall and not maybe the sidewall of a different tire on the inside dual position.

I would be checking the front tires (if all are Hankooks). Check all the hankooks you have.

If you do indeed find any tire without a date code (it does happen), then it is recallable for having an incomplete DOT.

The Hankook is mounted on the dually only. So, no. I can't take a picture of the SAME tire. I guess unless I unmount the tire to see front and back, which will happen next week, it will remain a mystery.

In the rare case no date is there on either side, will Hankook replaces the tires with new ones of the same size?

Yes, by federal law any tire without a complete DOT number has to be taken out of service and would be a recallable condition.

However, I am fairly confident you are going to find the complete DOT on one sidewall of the Hankooks. Let us know what you find next week. Thanks

Thanks, will do. Any opinion about the tire's age? Almost everyone here seems to vote against the 15 months old tires.

I'd run them and not give it another thought.

I am curious as to why I only see 5 tires in your first post.

They came in two shipments, 5 and 2.

I can see putting 15 month old tires on a TV or Car, but what about a 5th wheel where we generally everyone says to replace after 5 years.

I am trying to find Sailun S637T tires but nobody can guarantee that they will get them with a DOT for this year (2023) even. One place had tires in stock that were 3 years old and re-order another set in and those had a DOT 5021. I told them I wasn't going to put 1 1/2 year old tires on a 5th wheel and have them age out in 3 1/2 years.

I currently have tires with a DOT 2317. Do I just settle to get what I get. How do I go about getting fresh tires in the brand I want near me. Haven't tried Simple Tire yet, maybe I will get lucky with them.

Be safe -

I’m guessing your choice of Sailun tires aren’t a big seller, that’s why you’re only finding stale tires.

I’d change your brand selection.

I would, but have pretty much decided to go with Sailun tires is because of this forum.

I just talked to Simple Tire and they said they could only guarantee that the tires DOT would be within 4 years. They said their tires are in a climate control building not exposed to oxidation. They also said that these tires are one of their most requested tire and inventory turns over fairly fast, but still could only guarantee a DOT within 4 years. The CS individual also could request their newest inventory. It would be $20 per tire re-stocking fee if I wanted to return them.

I will take a look at others, but find few recommended choices in the size I need (ST235/85 R16 132/127 L G rated 14 ply)

Thanks and be safe -
