How to remove wheel simulator/hub cap from the wheel?
I was putting air in my tires this morning and dropped one of the steel caps from the valve stem. I think it went between the wheel and the wheel simulator. I also found out I don't know how to remove the wheel simulator. So how do these things come off?
Thanks.
Greg

Working around the wheel, pry it off with a flat screwdriver. Don't just pry in one spot or you'll bend the simulator.

I tried that and it did not want to budge so I decided to wait and ask here to make sure I was doing it right. Will try again next weekend at the storage lot.

My Sunseeker is different than this. Mine is just like a hubcap.

Like others have said they come off like a regular hubcap, on the sunseeker.

I bought a little L shaped nail remover, about 10" long, and pry in 2 or 3 places and it pops right off. Use my hand or a rubber mallet to put it back on.

DO NOT PRY YET! 3 of the 10 chrome lug nut covers are actually threaded and hold the simulator on. On mine you MUST remove them first or you will destroy the simulator. Look closely at the lug not covers. 3 of them are slightly different at the bottom. You SHOULD have received a tool to remove those 3 first. It is possible you don't have this type, however CHECK.

If your simulators are this kind there will be an indentation near the base of the lug nut covers that need to be removed with the special tool that should have been provided to you. Could be 2 or 3 have to be removed. then the simulator will pop off.

The video I found on YouTube for a horse trailer showed that as well. I couldn't find much else about these wheel caps. I will check to see if some of the lug nut covers screw off before I start prying.

Go to Northern Tools, Ebay or your local automotive store and pick up a Grip Tools Tire and Hub Cap Remover, Model# 52114. See Here. They make the job a lot easier and you are less likely to bend the hub cap / simulator taking it off and putting it back on....

Harbor Freight has this tool also. Works great at removing and replacing. Just pry around the rim in several spots and it will finally just pop off. Putting it back, make sure it is lined up properly (the fake lug nuts positioned over the real ones) and use the mallet end to hammer on in several places. Takes a little effort, but will eventually pop into place.

Our 1997 Minnie Winnie had a couple of lug caps you had to take off before removing the beauty ring. Does anyone know for sure whether the 3170 or 3171 do or do not have lug caps that need removing before prying?

My 2014 3170DSF, the wheel covers are one piece and just pop off with a little effort.

You may or may not have this type.
It is easy to see. Just look closely at the faux lug nut covers. 2 or three of them will be different at the base where they meet the chrome flat section. If you have them you will need to turn them off first. Then the wheel cover will fall right off.

Jim, I did look at them closely, and they all look the same to me. I think they are the same as Garrett's wheel covers. Should be safe to pull off with one of the above pictured tools.
