New TV mount - how to make support

We have a 2012 Forester 3011DS with the over cab entertainment system. We want to change the mounting on the TV. The current fixed mount is two metal strips at the top and bottom, with 4 screws supporting the tv. We bought an RV specific mount from etrailer with articulating arm which would enable the tv to be pulled away so we can access the area behind the tv in the over cab and also the rear hookups on the back of the TV. The problem is, there is nothing behind the tv for the new mount, so we will have to add some wooden 2x4s or something else behind it attached to the existing casework to support the new mount.

Has anyone out there done this who can offer suggestions on how to add the supports?

I can't see the left side of the opening. I have to assume it's the same as the right side. You will use the upright pieces at the left and right edges for support--the recessed ones, not the ones at the cabinet faces.
  • Cut two 1x2s to span the opening. Using oak will give you extra strength and match the current woodwork. Mount them horizontally at the very top and very bottom of the opening and screw them to the uprights at the edges. If you don't feel that wood screws into the cabinetry are solid (could be vinyl-wrapped chipboard), use threaded countersunk flat-head screws with nuts and washers on the back side.
  • Cut two more 1x2s to fit vertically. You will screw them to the back side of the horizontal 1x2s. They will be spaced evenly on either side of center, so the mounting holes on the new TV mount hit the center of the 1x2s.
  • If you give the oak 1x2s two coats of Deft (dries in two hours!) before screwing them into place, they will be a pretty good match to existing woodwork--but much stronger. Trust me, oak is strong enough to hold the TV.

If the two current horizontal metal strips are angle pieces of adequate strength and strongly mounted, then add two vertical angle irons near the center with a spacing width correct for the new TV mount. That is how FR installed the front entertainment center TV on my 2020 Sunseeker.
