Our Sunseeker's Glass Stove Top EXPLODED!
We have a 2018 Sunseeker 2420MS MH; have had it for 7 mos. Took it out for ten days, first trip this year, & on very first night, I start to cook some sausage (on only med. heat) for spaghetti. About 20 secs after I turn on burner, HUGE "boom", glass everywhere - glass top that goes over recessed burners literally "exploded" soo hard, a couple of pieces of the glass embedded in the wallpaper (right side)! Scared the living he** out of me, but at least I was smart enuff to grab my phone & take pics, which I immediately called & sent to the dealer. (Also cost us 2 lbs of sausage, glass got in the pan & I wasn't taking any chances, so threw it all out.) Then... I'm going for the broom & cut the he** out of my foot, stepping on a piece of glass; DH got to dig it out for me - ouch! (I never wear shoes inside the MH.) Thought ya'all might appreciate the pics & I'll b sure to advise how long it takes, to get the new glass top in...

Did you turn on the burner without raising the glass top? Glad there were no injuries.

My guess is “yes”. It will be interesting to know if that was the case. I can’t see the glass exploding if it was folded back behind.

It is tempered glass for safety (break into small pieces) and can sometimes explode like that. Even a tiny chip can release that energy.

Based on the way it shattered it is tempered glass. When tempered glass is manufactured, tremendous stresses put on the structure of the glass. If there is the slightest flaw it only takes a small scratch or bump in the right place to cause it to explode. This has also happened to several of the fancy glass bowl sinks in some of the larger 5ers. I would replace it with something other than glass.

Tempered glass is extremely tough to break by hitting the surface but can break fairly easily by hitting the edge. If there is an edge defect, even hidden in the mounting channel, breakage can be induced from thermal changes such as heat from the stovetop.
As some have noticed with their shower doors, tempered glass can also spontaneously break. The odds are about 1 in 1,000. Many times this is due to a microscopic inclusion in the glass such as nickel sulfide.
I'd just replace it and move on. Other than metal, there's no other material that will withstand the oven or stovetop heat.

This tempered glass is like the glass in your car windows (other than the windshield). Striking the glass with a sharp object at the edge of the glass will cause it to shatter. In the picture, there is some type of a spice container to the right rear corner with an edge on it. Possibly, opening the lid and catching the edge of the glass may have caused it to break. It may not be instantaneous. If you have ever broken a patio door window, it may start out very slowly, but then crumbles.
As for glass in the foot-ouch! We also do not wear shoes in the house or the RV. And yes, we have broken glass where we walk. I still have a piece of glass in mu foot that we could not get out. Given that, we have set up a plan. The person standing surrounded by broken glass stand still until the mate gets them shoes.

Similar explosion happened to me while the glass cooktop cover was opened and the stove wasn't even lit. Mine was in my 2018 Leprechaun 240FS. FW covered it under warranty.

Tempered glass in the kitchen
Same thing happened to me with Corelle dishware. You can compromise it only so much and then one day you look at it funny and you have an amazing explosion and shards so tiny you have to throw any nearby food out as well.

It's still under warranty; dealer has already order us a new one... I do however, like the idea of replacing it with something other than glass...

Thanks for sharing about the Corelle stuff, as I too, have had it break! Just can't understand why some still insist on it in their RVs, there is much LIGHTER plastic (reusable!) dishware out there, got mine at WalMart; all different colors, etc. Really like it.

PenJoe - THANKS for your post. The containers you see in pic are salt & pepper shakers. I know it doesn't look like there is much space between them & edge of glass when it is raised/folded back, but there is actually quite a bit. Interesting thought though, cuz the piece you don't see in pic, has a sort of "abrasion-looking scuff mark" on one edge - DH even asked me if it was there before (prior to the explosion); I don't think so (think I would have noticed it!), but certainly possible...

Got New Glass Cook Top Yesterday!
Two weeks isn't too bad...
Oh, and I failed to mention that our *&#@$* water pump went out, just last week (luckily we weren't boon docking, but still camping); only the diaphragm needed replacing (maybe a $10 part at most), but dealer installed an entire new pump, informing us the diaphragm + shipping would apparently cost THEM more than it would to just go ahead & replace the entire pump.
All was warranty work so no charge. I'm a happy girl again.
We leave on 5/27 to pick up grandsons @ their mom's in Colorado Springs (don't know who's more excited; me or them!), then go to Dallas to see Dan's mom & sis, then to Destin, Florida, to deliver them to their dad for the summer - about 6,000 miles round trip! Goin' to take our sweet time coming back!

We've never liked the glass top on our range top. It rattles going down the road no matter how hard the DW tries to stop it. Seeing this, makes me want to start building a custom butcher block top with rubber inserts to stop the noise. We checked out the ones at CW from Camco but they didn't fit right with too much gap.
