removing spare tire
Have a 2018 Forester 3011DS. How is the spare tire removed from beneath the unit?

If your spare wheel is attached the way mine was, it is held to the frame with a 6 inch bar secured by a nut. There was also a trailer safety chain wrapped around the wheel as a backup safety, should the nut have come loose. How a person would actually get the wheel down without a jack or something is anybody’s guess. I threw out this horrible design and installed a winch on mine.
The good thing is that the Sunseeker classic and Forester classic actually have a spare wheel, which many motorhomes do not.

With great difficulty! I've only taken our spare down once on our 3011 and I needed two people to do it. Since then I have figured out a way to use the scissor jack in the car to lower the tire once I have removed the hold down bolt. We always tow the car so the jack will always be available just hoping I never really need to use it. Additionally, I would only use this as a last resort option in case someone from Good Sam can't get there to replace a tire.

My solution is roadside assistance. I carry the socket & wrench necessary to remove the bolt. If I had to, I would stack (2) lumber to hold the tire while I remove the bolt and chain. Then use the chain to pull it off the lumber while I’m
well clear. My toad came with a pump so I can air it up. The flat goes in the toad
and the repair shop can put them back. But thats me. YMMV

Moved mine to the rear storage compartment. Figured my luck would find me with no roadside assistance on a cold and snowy night

I bought a tire carrier that I can bolt to the rear bumper, but have never used it. Instead, I carry it in the back of the truck. When I removed the tire, I did notice that it was partially damaged due to the pressure of the carrier. Yes - that was a bad location for a spare tire.

This thread is about a Forester motorhome spare wheel. Are talking about putting the spare in a truck that you tow behind your motorhome?

BehindBars,
I used to fight that battle for years. It cannot be fixed. The site team tried and failed. I even made a “special” term of art to describe the type.
All to no avail. Now I just don’t pay attention. If one persists, I just add them to the official, FRF sanctioned, Ignore List.
Happy Motoring

That’s my solution as well; however, I’m concerned that when roadside assistance sees how difficult the removal is they will say sorry and refuse to do it.

That is a great idea, and may do the same.

Screwed and glued a scrap piece of plywood with 2 carriage bolts holding tire to compartment wall. Compartment wall was too flimsy alone to attach tire to it. Nothing fancy just easier to get at the tire. Probably still might call roadside assistance to change duallies they can be a bear to get off

I can assure you that if I'm stuck along the road and need that tire, I'll get it on the ground by myself. I'm not the guy I once was but I can do things that amaze me when I need to. Everyone is correct. This is a bad setup.

My tire won’t fit in the rear compartment of my 3011ds
I was thinking of having my son fab a bracket for the bumper some how or an easier way to get it down from the original spot

My spare won’t fit in any storage bins, either. I put a winch on my Sunseeker, so the spare wheel cranks down on a cable like it would do on many trucks and vans. See post #9 in this thread: https://www.forestriverforums.com/fo...nt-203489.html

AAA had no problem getting the spare down.

Good to know.
I usually carry Good Sam RA but I’m still within the 5 year free Ford Roadside Assitance program, so that’s all I have for now.
