weight is key

Towed a corrolla behind my sprinter Class C. At 2800lbs, I could feel it in corners and up hill.

Bought a 2021 Chevy Spark, LS model, manual. Cheapest car in the US, and probably the lightest too. Relatively easy to mount base plate.

Have been about 10K miles w/ it, love it.

Bill

Tow behind

I have a 2020 FR Sunseeker 3010DS
Rated at 7500. - I pull a flatbed (2100 lb) with a 2019 outback V6 (4100 lbs). Combined length about 55 ft and combined weight around 21,000 lbs. I run at around 21-2200 RPM (60 - 62 MPH)
Ford V-10. I used to run 65 - 68 but found that speed knocked off a couple miles per gallon and increased my risk of DISASTER. So, instead of a q tip wagging a toad or trailer at 70 MPH scaring everyone around me, I'm the Q-tip that you can go around or pace. Recently did a trip from N.Florida to Cherokee. Took the car, came back thru hiawasee, blairsville, Helen and then back down and across to Valdosta. Averaged about 6.8 MPG despite the hill climbs. Overall close to 8MPG on the interstate with planning and restraint. I have still had to run up to 70mph on occasion or bury it on an entrance ramp but overall can safely run at the lower speed. If I need to make better time I'll just leave the RV at home and race with everyone else in the car at 80mph and 23 mpg. 8000 mi trip coming up so we'll get a much better idea of performance and mpg. Overall that extra 50 -70 miles in day isn't worth the stress.

What’s Everyone towing behind their Class C?

I’ve used a tow dolly and flat towed. Flat tow wins by a mile. If you want an automatic transmission you’ll probably pick a US make. I have a 2017 Chevy Equinox V6 AWD. Super easy, two switches, tranny in N, key in accessory position. Front hook up is two pins, electric plug and safety cables (3). Important that the tow bar is level.

I believe some of the hitches can be upgraded to 7500 lbs but most are 5000 max.

We currently pull a 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport behind our 3051.

Standard transmission so put in neutral, emergency brake off, and flip on the stay and play braking - ready to go.

We are looking at the Colorado as our next toad.
Tell me more about upgraded hitch weight to 7500 lbs. Our 32' Forester is rated for 5000 lbs and my Ford Explorer Sport weighs about 4900 with 1/2 tank gas. Was really wanting to find a way to flat tow it. 🤞

Wish that a Ford Escape could be flat towed since it's a FUN vehicle to drive. Traded mine in for a Explorer Sport (needed bigger) but sure miss it!

Smile Toad behind Leprechaun

We have a 2020 Leprechaun 319MB and pull a 4000# 2016 Chevy Equinox with no issues using the Blue OX setup and Demco Brake system. Costs us 2 mpg to tow. MPG drops from ~ 9 to ~ 7. Good luck. Flat tow, way to go!

Does anyone tow a VW? I would like to tow my 2012 VW Passat TDI, but don't know whether I can. Don't know where to search.

The first place to look would be your owner's manual, but for any of us to help we would need to know if your car is manual or automatic, front or rear-wheel drive.

Your Passat is not listed in the Dinghy Tow Guide for that year. That doesn’t mean it isn’t towable, the data may not have been available at time it published. It may also mean you still have to check your manual or VW database for whether it can be placed on a dolly.

I tow a Corolla, standard transmission with a Roadmaster Falcon 2. It is my third one (2010-2015 and 2018)! RV is a Solera 2011 Sprinter 3500 and my gas milleage drops of 1 MPG only when towing. I don't even know I'm towing so, be careful, I once turn too tigh and it cost me $5000 in body repair .

What does the owner's manual say? I have found most owner's manuals have a section called "recreational towing" or something similar, which will recommend if and how the car can be towed.

I just bought a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, not just to tow, but to play around with offroad a little. Very impressed with its ability. If a Jeep has a trail rated badge on it, it can do some fairly technical offroading right out of the box.

I got it all set up, but haven't towed with it yet.
I was previously towing our Malibu hybrid in a dolly, but it was killing me to get the safety chains on and off that low profile car. As everyone said, having to mess around with the tow dolly will get you to buy something to flat tow.

That said, it served its purpose, and if you have a small front drive CUV, you probably don't have to get on the ground to connect and disconnect the safety chains, so tow dollies are fine for many. The one I have has disc brakes.
The Malibu and dolly weigh 3900lbs, and the Cherokee weighs 4500lbs, but I won't have the tongue weight with the flat tow setup.

Our Sunseeker has a 7500lb hitch.

Our trips are usually a couple thousand miles, and no problems towing. Just don't try to run flat out because you over stress the engine for very little gain.

See the response from karykatz above.

That would explain why the paperwork for our 2014 Forester on the E450 shows 7500.

Was confusing though since the sticker on the hitch says 5k.
