What system do you use for TOAD??

Hi and thanks for your time I value your comments and replies.
I just bought my first TOAD vehicle. Eight 2010 sabaru outback all-wheel-drive.
I'm getting ready to tow behind my class c RV and wanted to know what system you use and why also what braking system do you use and why.

I pull my toad with a Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain.
It is very strong and can handle almost any car.
The think I like the most is that it has a great swivel point and no matter what angle/ ditch you drive in it will still pull the toad solidly straight.

The only other that folks will talk about is BlueOX which as something similar.

I'm using the Roadmaster Sterling All-Terrain along with the Roadmaster Invisibrake. It was important to me to have a system that could easily be managed by one person and also minimized setup.

I am using the Blue Ox tow setup with their Patriot braking system and like it so far. I haven't used any other so I can't make a comparison. One thing I do like is most of the Blue Ox equipment that is on the TOAD is hidden where there seems to be a large crossbar that has to be attached when using the Road Master.

It's in my sig but...

Blue Ox Avail with the Kar Guard II a little over 2.5K miles now and not one rock ding on the Jeep.

I think I could unhook from the Avail if the Jeep was canted at a 45° angle! Great tow bar.

For brakes we use the SMI AirForce One.

Solo, I can hookup/unhook and be ready to roll in under 10 min (and that is counting the time it takes for me to electronically shift the Jeep transfer case to neutral/drive)

Same as GMACKLEM- Blue Ox towBars with Patriot Braking. Nice easy set up I also use magnetic tow lights. We travel with the bicycles on the back of the toad and and if their covered you cant see the tailights

What system do you use for TOAD??

Demco with an RVI2 brake for my 2014 Subaru Outback. The Outback was purchased new and Demco stepped up with a connection pan. Worked with dealer and Demco to get a pan built. I liked the Demco, price, support design and USA made. Brake system, small, 3button press setup, works well.

I use the NSA ReadyBrute Elite RV Tow Bar. It has a built-in braking system that is simple in design and execution as it simply has a cable attached to your brake pedal that pulls on the pedal when you are braking in the RV. This is my 3rd different type of tow bar/brake setup and the one I like best of all.

Tow Bar

X2 or more on the Demco. I have used it for three seasons it it tows straight and is easy to hook and unhook.

I'm pleased with our Roadmaster Falcon 2, but it can be hard to release if the toad isn't straight behind the coach. If you decide on a Roadmaster and can afford the difference, I'd recommend their All Terrain. They claim you can release it at any angle.

We have a Blue Ox Patriot braking system. It works fine. Other brands have similar features. Compare their features and weights. Those that use an air compressor to provide braking force can use a lot of power and can drain your toad battery quickly. The Patriot uses little power when it's not applying the brakes. We've towed for nearly two days just on the toad's battery. I have since added a wire to supply 12 volts from the coach to the toad.

I'd recommend against any system that gets its signal from the coach's brake lights. They fully apply even if you just want light braking. Our Patriot does not apply at all with light braking, and I can adjust the braking force or turn it off with the wireless remote.

One disadvantage of the Patriot is that it takes 2 or 3 seconds to fully apply the brakes. Some claim to be faster.

By turning it off remotely I assume you mean tell it to quit braking? How do you do that as there are times I would like to be able to stop it from braking.

tow bar and brakes

Obviously most people are happy with whatever they got, there does not seem to be any horrible product out there but nonetheless I have my opinion. I am using the Demco Commander tow bar, hooks up and releases easily at odd angles, reasonably priced, good instructions and you get a knowledgable person if you call them. SMI stay in play for the brakes because their system is totally out of the way, just flip a switch to turn it on or off, it will not activate unless you have pushed on the brake pedal(no activation of your car brakes just because you hit a bump), easy adjustment of sensitivity and again it is easy to get someone knowledgeable on the phone. The Stay In Play is a little harder to install than the box sitting on the floor but it is very positive(no problems with boxes pushing against soft car seats) and a lot less trouble afterwards.

We have a Sunseeker 3010DS and tow a Jeep Wrangler. We use the Blue Ox system after attending last year's RV show in Hershey. No regrets. We use a Brake Buddy system based on several recommendations from friends. Also no regrets!

Just dial the remote control from 0 for no braking to 9 for maximum force.

Dial the remote to 0 to make it release the brakes quicker. Sometimes I have to do this when it has a false application on a rough railroad crossing.

Our Lexington tows our Saturn Vue with a Blue Ox towbar and Patriot brake system. Very easy to hook up, used almost 20,000 miles so far. Alaska, all around Midwest, right now on trip from WI thru Yellowstone, on to Oregon and then down to Texas.
