Advice on Highway 93, from Twin Falls, Id to Las Vegas

We're looking to head home from Lake Chelan, WA to our home in West Phoenix. We want to stop for a couple of nights in Vegas, to visit close friends.
The shortest route is Highway 93, through the very east side of Nevada. I know nothing about anything between Wells, Nevada and Vegas. It doesn't look like much is worth seeing along 93.
Friend suggested going through SLC instead.
Appreciate any feedback.

I haven't been through there since 1989 and only from I-80 south. I was deadheading a semi pulling a drop deck and it was a big wide open road and not much traffic. I just set the throttle and let it stroll.

But is there anything to see or do?

No, there's not much to see or do along that route. But have you driven I-15 through the SLC corridor recently? That's crazy traffic for almost 100 miles.

I have driven this route a bunch as its the fastest way from Seattle to Phoenix. There is not much to see or do you are going through the high desert for most of the route and its 2 lane highway.

I've driven it at night and during the day. I personally enjoy the isolated highways like this and as mentioned above it is the shortest route.

I have done the SLC route as well and as mentioned by another member above the traffic was awful and tons of road construction. Only did it once and have never done it that way again.

No different than any other trip out west. You just have to plan and think ahead.

Last year we took 93A from Wendover down to Ely, NV - I think it was called the Great Basin. While no stunning vistas, you can see for miles and it's definitely less traveled than other routes. At Ely, we went west on the "loneliest road in America" to Reno and loved the solitude. Great Basin NP is just east of Ely, if you time to stop. Don't know any more about 93 south to Vegas, but I'm betting the views are similar. Enjoy the wild west!

Hiway 93.

Do not do SLC. 93 is the best route to Vegas. If I remember correctly, the Area 51 gas station and bordello is along that route.

It’s a solitary drive!

There are really only three towns from Twin; Jack Pot, Wells, and Ely on your way down US93. It is different than other roads as there are little to no services except in the about mentioned towns. South of Ely about 10 miles is Cave Lake Recreation Area on the left. Beautiful spot with two large RV camping areas. About 15 miles farther south on the right are the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park with RV camping both are nice, beautiful spots. From there we headed east on US 50 so that is as far south on US 93 that we have been.

My bad. The Area 51 stop is on 95. 93 is my prefered route from Boise to Las Vegas. Good RV parks in Jackpot, Ely, Alamo. Take US 6 west out of Ely to NV 318 south. After Hiko you will be back on 93. Cheapest gas along route is in Wells.

I was just on US 93 from Twin Falls to Wells, NV this week. There is a lot of traffic on that stretch. It is not that interesting. The road from Wells south through Ely is much more interesting. It is a good alternative to the Interstates.

Ely, NV has the train museum. That place looks really cool, though I may be biased as my father worked for a railroad for decades.

I like watching some of the YT stuff by Russ with RVerTV to find off the beaten path and small town places to check out. He's got a few videos about Hey 93 and Ely, McGill, etc.

Great Side Trip in Twin Falls

If you have a little time, stop by Shoshone Falls, on the Snake River, just East of Twin Falls. It's gorgeous during spring runoff, but should still have lots of water running over the falls. I think the fee to enter the park is around $5.

Another great stop is on the South side of the Perrine bridge, as you just enter Twin Falls. It's a beautiful view of the Snake River canyon. If you're lucky, you'll see some base jumping off the bridge. (It's one of the few bridges that you can legally jump off of). Holiday weekends can have hundreds of jumps over the weekend.

As mentioned above, take Hwy 318. Twin Falls fuel is usually a good price. Wells, Ely, and Alamo are good stops with fuel and food if you want to stretch your legs. LV is the next stop.

Thanx everyone for your input. Because of the extreme heat at home, we're making a beeline home so this route is the quickest and sightseeing isn't necessary now.

From Chelan I assume you’re coming down 84. A prettier route would be to go 84 to 15 south. A little longer I imagine but northern Utah, especially around Logan is nice. You’ll skirt the mountains and Zion through St George. Otherwise from Boise through Winnemucca is just a plain ugly trip. I’ve done it several times though in the spring it’s certainly better than summer or fall.

We don't have our RV anymore so one night hotel stay in Twin Falls and a night with friends in Vegas, then home.

You can spend a night sky-watching if you take NV375 out of Hiko: Fridays (late afternoon through early evening) is sometimes interesting, as well.

I take it that you’re traveling 93 from Kingman to AZ-60 then 303 into Goodyear: there’s hardly been a weekend that I’ve traveled that corridor in the last 3 years that there hasn’t been a serious accident — worst times are Sunday afternoon and evening with the drunks coming out of Vegas — but you’re probably already aware of that. There’s a lot of construction on 93 the last 5-6 miles southbound before it merges into 60, which is getting so beaten up that AZDOT had a hotline to get reimbursed for road damage to vehicles.

After spending a few hours on too many weekends waiting for AZDPS to clear a fatal accident on 93 (especially on that long two-lane road from Wikeup to Wickenburg), we’ve begun taking 95 out of Needless, CA to Parker, into Quartzite, and going on US 10 East toward home. Longer route, but safer.
