Alaska Trip

Considering a six to eight week trip to Alaska next summer. Anyone have an itinerary you would be willing to share? Starting in Kansas so any entrance point from Montana west would work. Thanks for your guidance.

A route is not that important. It will all be brand new if you are from Kansas. The Milepost is the place to look for info. It is too bad that so many people visit Alaska on a cruise ship and never go back. I love the place.

I have 2 brothers in Alaska, it’s beautiful up there. X2 on milepost, it will help with gas stops. Pay attention to construction signs, they will occasionally close roads at night to work on them. Cars just back up and people sleep in their cars. If you like Christmas, stop in North Pole Alaska, it was pretty cool and our kids loved it. Fairbanks can get hot in the summer. Mosquitoes are as bad as everyone says they are. If you go to Denali and ride the bus back into the park; don’t be one of ‘those guys’ that gets off and heads into a field when a bear and her cub are spotted. Yes, you can get on and off the bus anytime you want. Don’t expect to see the top of the mountain, it’s not visible most days.
Have fun

While I have never been to Alaska via our RV, I would recommend that you check out this couple's YouTube videos. They are Kyle & Renee of HappilyEverHanks and have some great insight to Alaska. They recommend, like the others above, using the MilePost book.

Check out their Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/@HappilyEverHanks/videos

My YouTuber suggestion would be "Traveling Robert". He made an extensive trip to Alaska this past summer starting from Florida, crossing into the mid-west states, Yellowstone, and into Alberta, Canada on the Al-Can Highway from Montana. His videography is excellent as is his commentary on campgrounds and pricing, re-supplying options, places to stop along the way, and more. Because of his trip and the pure beauty, my wife and I are seriously considering a trip into the Canadian Rockies to visit Jasper NP, Banff NP, and Glacier NP.

Another tip on visiting Denali NP and taking the bus trip into the park. If you are able to take the extended trip over 90 miles in, one way, don't eat or drink too much before the excursion. This is an all-day affair with multiple stops to view wildlife. There is only one bathroom stop at the end of the ride and it can make for a very uncomfortable situation. I know.

You can drive all of the paved roads in the state in a week. Slow down and enjoy yourself. I like to stop at the old roadhouses and meet the locals. Look for smoke from campfires in remote areas. I have found family groups of Athabascans smoking fish. Get out and hike and feel the country. Sourdough pizza, halibut burgers, smoked salmon is available everywhere, huckleberry ice cream.

Sweetgrass/Couts is the most popular crossing point as it's a straight shot up to Calgary and on to Edmonton. I chose to cut over to Highway 22 at Calgary and it's an easy running two lane all the way north to Highway 43. Lots of small towns and food and fuel are easy in and out. After that it's pretty straight on to Dawson Creek. Although there is a way around Grande Prairie by turning north and the west again a few miles up the road.
