Albuquerque campgrounds

We hope to attend the Gathering of Nations pow wow next spring. We will need at least water and electric, don't really need amenities. Just nice and quiet. Any suggestions near or on the fair grounds? I think it is also known as the Tingsley colosseum.

On the west side of town on I-10 is the Route 66 Casino RV Park...awesome place!

Spent a week there last April!

Oh yeah...better book now!

I was there during the event you are talking about and the town was pretty booked up RV sitewise...

Thanks John. I've seen that one driving through. It seems to be a long way from fairgrounds. How was the drive? Traffic? Thanks!

I'm sure you'll get good advice soon. I live in ABQ and while the fairgrounds (Expo NM) does have RV parking on site, I wouldn't really consider that "nice and quiet". The neighborhoods to the east and south are sort of sketchy, especially after dark. I believe the RV parking lot (some sites have full hook-ups) has decent security but the fair grounds are right in the middle of town, so probably not quiet, just conveniently located.

There are a lot of nice restaurants, shops and a big movie theater just 5 minutes north of the fairgrounds, though, so between the Gathering of Nations and that you'd have plenty of options for fun.

It might be a quieter at the KOA which is maybe 6 or 7 miles east, but it's bordered by a busy street and the freeway. I've never stayed there but I'm sure someone else here will come along with a review.

All other RV parks are further out along I-40 or up near the Balloon Park off I-25. Those tend to get nicer ratings. But honestly, nothing is very far away in ABQ! Outside of rush hour, you can get almost anywhere in town in about 15 minutes.

We stayed at the KOA a few years ago for a couple of days during the balloon festival. It is also pretty close to the freeway, but the noise did not bother us.

We stayed at the KOA in September for 3 or 4 nights. Nice KOA, had a deluxe site that was pricey, but that was a tradeoff for me staying at the CG while the wife went to a conference downtown. CG is next to the freeway, but noise is not bad. My reservation about it is that the neighborhood is not a place I would want to be in after dark - that is, every place has high security fencing and bars on doors and windows. Seems to be a higher amount of homelessness there than I have seen in other places, including Bay Area where I lived some time ago. Park has security guard and locked gate after 8 pm and controlled entry. Lots of people just milling about gas stations AM Pm stores etc. If I was to go back to Albuquerque, I would look to stay in a better neighborhood, if possible, but the KOA was well kept and nice.
