1. Route 22 heading west from Jackson is a 10 1/2% grade. It will really test your vehicle.
2. If you do any hiking be sure to carry bear spray. The one time we didn't we had a Grizzly Bear cross our path 30 feet from us. That got our attention.

We're running a 2020 GMC 2500, with the 6.6L gas hauling our bumper pull 26BHHL. I've heard the road west is steep, and our plans don't include trying it. Our last trip trough Jackson, we went south to Lava Hot Springs.
Thanks for the tip in bear spray! We'll make sure we've hot some.

I agree with ppine. I live in Cheyenne, and we usually refer to it as the "arm pit of Wyoming."
It's pretty much 100 miles from anywhere.
As ppine stated, save the 2 nights as they would be better spent somewhere nice.
However, on the way from Laramie to Cheyenne, there is Vedauwoo. It has some very interesting rock formations and areas that one can hike.
If you were planning to stay for one or two nights in Cheyenne, you would be better off staying in Vedauwoo area. The road actually has dispersed camping along it which comes out on Happy Jack Rd. Once on Happy Jack Rd, you turn right (heading east) and within about 5 or 6 miles you will find Curt Goudy state park. It's a fee area without hookups, but a nice area to camp. If there is anything available. Best time to hit this area is during the week as the weekends get insanely busy.
Everyone in this area are stir crazy and have cabin fever so once it does start warming up, tons of people head for Curt Goudy and Vedauwoo on the weekends.
Be sure to arrive after Memorial day weekend as that's considered the first 3 day weekend of camping and everywhere is completely insane.
The area has tons of boondocking areas if you are looking for that.

A few years ago we went to Mount Rushmore, via Sheridan and East, then came back through Casper to Thermopolis to Cody and Yellowstone. It was a great trip.
I had some time today and made our reservations in Great Falls, then on to West Yellowstone, Dubois, Rock Springs, Cheyenne. Casper, Sheridan and Helena. So far everything but one is booked. We'll be there at the beginning of June, so no Frontier Days this trip. I'd like to go back at some point and see how much the show has changed in 30 years.
Site prices were up there, with about $735 for 9 nights. 2 more nights to follow, so still pretty decent.

Last year we spent a week in Yellowstone /Tetons area and based out of Dubois @ The Longhorn Ranch RV Resort. It was a great trip the trip into the parks was a treat in it's self because of the beautiful scenery along that road. Also there in Dubois there is a Ram sheep museum as well as a military museum. We one day just wandering around on the backroads just outside of Dubois and it was a great day. We came into Dubois from Cheyenne and the trip in was also beautiful. Frome Dubois we went east to Evansville Wy.for a couple of days & then on up to Spearfish for a week to visit Custer state park, Devils Tower,Badlands, Sturges,Ect. in that area. We intend to go back to that area in a few years if possible.

During our cross-country trip last summer, we found ourselves in Wyoming quite a bit and loved it. Heading to Yellowstone we found ourselves ahead of schedule and landed up in Daniel, WY, population 151 for two nights. But a short drive down Rt. 189 was the town of Pinedale. A great Western town with a fantastic brew pub Wind River Brewing Co.
We also spent three days in Jackson to be able to tour Grand Tetons NP. No wonder the rich and famous live here, what a great town, and the Tetons are beautiful.
Backtracking heading back East along I80 we stayed a couple of nights in Cheyanne. I haven't been here since I was 10 years old, bought my first pair of cowboy boots there with my paper route money. We loved it, could've stayed another night or two. We stayed at AB Campground just 2 miles from downtown. Great pull-through sites, very friendly owners, and one of the better laundry facilities we found two months on the road.

I haven't read the whole post but here are a few of my must see locations in Wyoming.
Devil's Tower (they play Close Encounters on a big TV every night)
Big Horn mountains
Yellowstone NP
Grand Tetons NP
Jackson
If you happen to find yourself down near Casper, check out the Oregon Trail Ruts, Register Cliff and Fort Laramie down near Guernsey. There are no hookups but camping in Guernsey State Park is really nice and quite picturesque.

Would have loved to tour through the Big Horns if time permitted. We did visit Devil's Tower a couple of years ago during our trip to So. Dakota, Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and so forth.
A correction from my earlier post is Pinedale is on Rt. 191 not 189. The two roads junction into 191 at Daniel.
For any book readers out there read the author C.J. Box and his Joe Pickett series. Box is a rancher in Wyoming and his stories center around Sheridan and Saddlestring, WY in the midst of the Big Horns. As any good author does, Box lays out a great visual of the Big Horns and living the Wyoming lifestyle.

Back in 2005 (by car) DW and I did a trip from Illinois to Rapid City, Deadwood, Mt R, CH and so forth also. One day I suggested to go to Devil's Tower. Got this blank look, told her about Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind which still didn't seem to register. While there we walked all the way around the base and there were several climbers scaling it (climbers must register at the office).
Be safe -

Stinger,
The memory of the first warm day long about April in eastern Wyoming and heading up to
Vedauwoo is strong. Bring some close friends, build a fire, have something good to drink. I cannot forget it after those Wyo winters.

Rock Springs to Cheyenne is nothing but I-80 and heavy truck traffic. I have never found anything worth stopping for and the same thing goes for Casper. Spend more time in Northern Wyoming and Montana.

Last time we were in Casper, we had a great night at a Friday night rodeo. Guess we'll see heat this year brings!

I lived in Newcastle, WY for 7 years and Cheyenne for about 3. I 110% agree with Blackrock. Northwestern Wyoming and Southern Montana are the places to spend your time! There is very little to see in eastern Wyoming, unless you choose to cross into South Dakota.
Devil's Tower in northeastern Wyoming is kinda cool if you are a Close Encounters fan.

I went to wedding in Newcastle once. The price of admission was the wearing of a felt hat. The reception was out at the log and stone country club. Very cool. The bride and groom left in a black 1949 Cadillac. A fun and stylish wedding in a small town.
In summer Cody has a rodeo every night.

Looking at the weather forecast it looks like it may be a bit soggy. Here's to hoping the weather folks are as right in Wyoming as they are here!

Yeah, your pretty much right on spot.
We have had some big time thunder storms with a few tornados in the last 2 or 3 weeks.
The weather service is claiming, more coming for the next 5 to 7 days.
But yeah, I'd like to be a meteorologist. One of the only jobs you can get that pays you to be wrong all the dang time.
Here is an example of what happened this last weekend:

Talk about ruining your camping season :-(

We made our almost 5,000 km (3,000 mile) trip and had a great time! Only issue was a flat one the truck, which we got fixed up in Rock Springs. There was lots to see, and we enjoyed all of it. We found a fair amount to do at each spot and along the way. We'd definitely do it again!
Yes some of the roads are less scenic than driving in the mountains, but it was a decent trip. It's good to see that both states have the same two seasons we do - Winter and Construction season.
Judging by the number of plates heading north, Colorado should be about empty fairly soon. No idea where everyone's going, but I'd say about every 1 in 4 vehicles that passed us had Colorado plates.
We had a half a dozen people talking about the tennis ball we put on our trailer ball on the truck. An older lady was even poking at it! Lol.
And since the discussion came up, on behalf of many Canadians, we're sorry that the smoke from our early wildfire season is effecting your state(s). I'm sure most Canadians would rather not be watching our backyards burn in May and June.
