Anyone familiar with Gallup, NM? Raton?

I’m going to be spending some time doing landscape, sunrise/sunset, and weather photography throughout New Mexico and wonder about those sights that you might recommend as “must-see” or visit… probably spending time around Gallup, Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Raton — particularly Gallup and Raton.

Any recommendations?

We enjoyed a visit to Capulin Volcano when we were out that way. That would be a good place for some photography.

If going to be around Gallup and there is time, a visit to Canyon de Chelly (locals pronounce it 'canyon de "shey"). Yes, it's 106 miles away but the photo ops between Gallup and there are almost endless.

Here's what you'll see in the canyon:

I think the NRA location near Raton has a campground, if you have time, I would try to go around the Taos area travel the Enchanted Circle.

The NRA facility is the Whittington Center and the campground is like a Forest Service campground with hookups.

Lots of wildlife wandering around.

I have cabin reservations at Whittington Center for a week’s worth of classes. Taos: Enchanted Circle? On the list now, thank you.

Anyone know if there are public tours of Los Alamos National Lab? Their web site is vague, with the exception of mentioning the Bradbury Science Museum.

Great!!!! Also take a ride out to the Gorge Bridge, a short ride after the bridge is a area that has a lot of what they call Earth Homes, interesting sites to see.

Galllup has the best Indian pawn shops anywhere. Real old jewelry, saddles, rifles and plenty of other stuff. I like Route 666. Ship Rock, Canyon de Chelley. You can rent horses and ride the Canyon with a Dine guide. Raton has the Pass and the race track. Northern N Mex has plenty to look out. Visit Georgia O'Keefe country.

Used to, it is now 491. It originally went from Gallup NM to Cortez CO (Shiprock is north of Gallup). Interesting history of 666 and other highway numbering systems: https://highways.dot.gov/highway-his...-beast-highway

This was the most interesting sight that I found in Raton but I suspect it has returned to Mexico City by now.

Never seen a clearer case of putting the cart before the horse.

Much easier to park trailer that way.

On the Colorado side of Raton Pass is Trinidad SP. This was our favorite weekend campground when we lived in Colorado Springs.

Los Alamos technical areas are a secure facility. There are no "tours" available of the lab property, except a walking tour of some of the downtown area including the Bradbury Museum and Bathtub Row. There is also the Los Alamos History Museum open to the public.
