If you live in the SE...the hot air ballon festival at Calloway Gardens, North of Columbus, GA is a great event around Labor Day each year

May have to take you up on that one. We were married in a hot air balloon. Now celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary by going to the festival

W'd love to go. it's on the bucket list. Canonman, how far in advance did you get campground reservations? I heard they sell out early.

I'm just starting to get my priorities straightened out. Hopefully work will be less of an issue with the biggest problem being "Where do we want to go next"

Reservations for the RV sites at the balloon park need to be made about 3 months in advance for the dry camp area. There were plenty available when I called last July. They do have sites with hook ups and I don't know how far in advance you need to reserve those. There are a number of private RV parks around town with access to shuttle bus service. We were looking at a park at the one of the Indian Casinos, Isleta Lakes & RV Park. These guys didn't take reservations and told me you probably wouldn't need one for their park. They rated pretty high on the Good Sam site. Heres their link Albuquerque Casino & Resort - Hotel, Spa, Golf | Isleta

Going for the third time for the first weekend. I've never seen the mass Ascension and I want to photograph that. First year someone was killed before I got there so the balloons didn't go up much. Second year got there late. This year I plan to shoot everything I've missed in previous years. Especially more of the GLOW. Going to boondock across the street at Sandia Casino then hit the road south. For you photographers - if you go up Tramway to the top and look down on the balloon park, you can get some fantastic shots if you have a zoom lens. You are above and even with them for quite a while!

Mass ascension might be better shot from a distance. How far up Tramway do you think is necessary to look down on the field

There is a pull off to the left just north of the entrance to the golf course at Sandia Casino that worked for me.

What do you shoot with? I see the "Canonman" moniker.

We stayed at the Isleta "Lakes" CG about eight years ago, and it was a poorly maintained dump. The "Lakes" consisted of 3 catfish ponds, the store hadn't been restocked in months, not even any ice, and the water pressure was so blow that I had to shake the shower head to get any water out!

The festival made up for all of that, though! Awesome!

I spoke with the resort and they fired the management group that was running the place for them. The tribe runs it now and they claim the issues are resolved.
I'm not a pond fisherman so didn't ask about fishing. Pictures on the web site look good though

Wow I thought we would be later on our way through there but we are ahead of schedule. We were planning on being in that area tomorrow then on to Texas. How big of a hassle would it be to make a detour? I mean could we just drive in and dry camp for a night. Where exactly would we go - is it easy to find? I have real spotty internet in the park we are in and research takes forever. Is there a good spot to see this event from a roadway if we can't make a park? Thanks it actually sounds like a fun detour

DW and I lived in ABQ for 6 years. If you attend the balloon event, make sure you refer to it as the Balloon Fiesta so you dont sound like an outsider. Just sayin'

Well I figured something out on my own, we are in a campground and have tickets for the am. The phone still works for some things I guess. Looking forward to the 'show'!

Couldn't agree with this more. I happen to live in ABQ (since 1982) and get to watch the balloons from my back yard! The sights of 100's of balloons in the air are a must-see, as well as the evening "balloon glow." That's when the balloons are tethered and the burners are lit, so the colors of the balloon "glow" in the dark. The only down side for those of us who live here is the increased traffic.

For places to camp, as others have said make reservations well in advance.
