Best Route Around Reno To The South

Heading across Nevada on Hwy 50 today. Plan to stay somewhere east of Reno, then going south to Oakdale, CA (NE of Modesto on Tuesday). Looking for any info on best route(s) to avoid busy interstates and cities, but still RV friendly. We are a small Class C with toad. Also, any suggestions for campgrounds/RV parks east of Reno area would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

SR88 out of Minden/Gardnerville is the best I80 alternate over the Sierras towards the Central Valley.
SR108 and SR4 are a struggle with RV's and 108 may still be closed for the winter.
SR 120 through Yosemite is also closed for the winter.

Agree with upflying. Be sure to top off your fuel tank in Carson City or Minden since prices are much better than Ca.

If you are traveling Hwy. 50, you will be heading into Carson City, not Reno (unless you particularly want to visit Reno). There's an RV park in Dayton (right on Hwy. 50) just east of Carson City, Dayton Rv park.

Thanks for the info. Exactly what I needed to know. Have our route in the GPS taking Hwy 88. And thanks for the RV park info....we are spending the night at Dayton RV Park tonight! Thanks again.

Gold Dust West on Hwy 50 in Carson City has a decent rv park. I stayed there many times before moving to Carson. Frankly, the traffic is very mild on Hwy 395/580 thru Reno. I wouldn’t be concerned about trying to avoid it. Only bad time might be at rush hour near downtown “spaghetti bowl” fwy intersections. As a former Los Angelean, this is a piece of cake!!!

How did the trip to Oakdale turn out?

I wish I had seen your post yesterday, I would have recommended you take Alt 50 west of Fallon and got on I-80 and taken it to Sacramento and then CA 99 south to CA 120 east.

Driving thru the Sierras in winter can be very dangerous and more so in an RV pulling a toad

Route 50 is not a problem due to traffic.
Watch the weather. The Sierra has been snowy for days. We got 8 inches at the house one night in the valley.
