Best travel route?

Getting ready to leave in 2 weeks for our main get away this year. We are leaving Western Washington and going to South Dakota, then to Idaho Falls Idaho for wife's family reunion, then to West Yellowstone. We have reservations at stopping points and also plan on some overnights at Casinos and Walmart. My question is when we leave S Dakota plan on driving on I 90 west back to I 15 and drop down into Idaho. Has anyone driven on 191 from Bozeman or 287 from Three Forks Mt? It looks like that could cut some miles off my route, but not sure what condition roads are in. We are traveling with 2008 Chevy3500 duramax long bed SRW and towing Crusader 340rst. (36-37 ft). On RV Trip Wizzard it shows a low bridge (10ft 11in) on the 191 route. My 5th wheel sits at about 12ft 9in. Would appreciate any information. Thanks

What's the location of the low bridge on 191 ? I towed a TT down that route that was over 11 ft and don't recall any issues.

I'd take 191 down to 20. 287 is also a nice a scenic drive. Either might save some miles but maybe not a lot of time.

Looking at google maps, it looks like 191 and 287 are close in time and miles while 90-> 15 is 50 miles further and close to 1/2 hr longer.

I expanded the map some and it appears low bridge is not on 191 but on maybe a river that runs parallel to 191. Thanks for your other information, I think we may take the 90 to 15 route just because after we leave Idaho we are headed to West Yellowstone for a few days. When we leave to go home will probably take 191 to 90 then wander towards home. Thanks again, useful info.

Hwy 191 south out of Bozeman is a good road and hwy 20 on down through Idaho is a good route. Can be heavy traffic at times but scenic.

We just got back from a 32 day trip. Covered Rushmore, to Saskatchewan to Glacier, to West Yellowstone, down to SLC, through Co. and back to Dallas. Because we went north to Canada, we didn't drive I90 all across SD, but the parts we drove were excellent. It's an 80mph highway, so be prepared to get passed. We picked up I90 back in Billings, took it west to Bozeman and then picked up Hwy 191 south all the way into West Yellowstone. Hwy 191 runs along the Gallatin River for quite a long way and makes for a very scenic drive. No problem with the road, just take it slow. From West Yellowstone, we took Hwy 20 down through Idaho Falls - again, a nice road with no issues. There are several decent grades on this so use brakes accordingly.

One more thing - I used RV Trip Wizard software to plan my route. It did an excellent job. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a route planner.

Thanks for all the information. we need to be in Idaho Falls at a certain time so not much time for site seeing. I think we will take I 90 to I 15 then head down to Idaho. When we head up to West Yellowstone we aren't on any time restraints, other then to Grizzley rv park. Will take hwy 161 back up to I 90 and take our time to enjoy the ride. I used rv trip wizard also, very helpful in planning. Getting first hand information on road conditions is really helpful also. Thanks to all.

Hwy 20 from Idaho Falls to Hwy 191 will take you right into West Yellowstone and then a couple blocks to Grizzly. That's where we stayed also. Very nice campground. Be sure to bring bug spray as the mosquitoes were out of control.
