We haven't been there in many years, but I would be much more concerned with drug runners than simply illegals. Being a national park, they're going to tell you no firearms. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere outside the main park areas unless in a group or armed. Border Patrol should be very active, but no harm being safe. We used to walk across the border at Laredo and El Paso anytime we visited, but I'll never do it again. Just way too dangerous these days with the cartels.

This is copied from the National Parks Service Website
Congress approved a new law allowing loaded
firearms in national parks starting Feb. 22,
2010. That means people can openly carry legal
handguns, rifles, shotguns and other firearms
and also may carry concealed guns as allowed by
state statute.
While this law changes gun regulations in national
parks, there are still many important restrictions on
the transportation and use of guns under state and
federal laws
To carry in Texas you must have a CHL License.

Hey everybody, would just like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the kind of advice that one does not get in the travel brochures about Big Ben, or any place for that matter! We are still weighing our options and we will report back to you all about how things are.

Thanks, joenic53 - Was not aware of that. Appreciate the info. Both of us have our licenses, so no problem there.
Jim Coolyard - If you get a chance, take the relatively short trip over to New Mexico and visit Carlsbad Caverns. Fantastic! I know there are some RV campgrounds there at Carlsbad that look nice in the pictures I've seen. Have a great trip - most folks don't realize just how much there is to see and do in Texas, but you'll see some beautiful wild country!

Defintely spring is better than summer. It's a boiling pot in the summer. See Santa Elena Canyon at the west end and Boquillas Canyon at the east end. If you visit Terlingua, east at the Starlite Cafe....the best pork medallions I've ever tasted. The little Boot Hill is quite interesting. If you say Study Butte,,,,,don't say Studdy Butt......it's Stoody Byoot. Rio Vista RV park at the east end of the park is nice.

Big Ben
We have been in the Big Ben area for 4 yrs in a row now during spring break, we stay at David Mountain State Park, which is a little over 100 miles from Big Ben, but 30 from Alpine, 16 from McDonalds Observatory , and the town of Ft Davis is very nice, we dont mind the drive down to Big Ben from there.

The monsoon season starts in late May, but according to the website the average is 88 degrees, but I would plan for even hotter. You will be in the desert afterall.

The best bet is to visit their website to plan your trip. There should be no problem with getting a camping spot since this is also their off season. You can check their reservation system or call and see if there are any full hook ups available. It is beautiful there.

It would be worth the heat to beat the crowds...especially after this long, slow snowy spring in West Michigan.
