Browning, MT to Alberta, Canada

Anyone have experience with Montana Hwy. 464 Browning to Babb, then 89 North into Alberta Canada? Planning a trip in July. Decent road?

Thanks!

Just a two lane strip of asphalt across the Blackfoot Indian reservation. I wouldn't recommend it. Just take Hwy 89 all the way from Browning to Babb.

We take that highway all the time and we've had no issues with it, with the trailer or without. It seems like there is less elevation and winding road than the 89. Neither road has super wide shoulders.. Summer crowds might make the 89 busier..

We gas up in Browning - there is an Exxon, Cenex, and one at the grocery store on the south end of town. The Cenex or the grocery store are the easiest to get into and out of. Or you can gas up in Babb or St. Mary's.

Fuel was cheaper on the reservation than in St. Mary's, which is where we stayed near Glacier NP. Browning also has a Subway, which I believe was the only fast-food lunch stop in town.

Thanks to all who responded. Good info on fuel. Here's another question, concerning fuel - I'll be spending a week in the Athabasca/Slave Lake area, maybe head up to Peace River, is diesel readily available? Tried gasbuddy but didn't seem to cooperate with my search. I only have my truck fuel tank.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Diesel is a plentiful as gasoline up north just fill up wherever you can. That is still pretty settled country around there looks like they even have WalMart.

Great - I'll quit worrying about that and move on to something else

Thanks.

Oh yeah, I'd read somewhere Slave Lake had a Walmart....so looked up their city directory:

Yep, I'd say the area is pretty settled.

Travelling from AB to MT, I use Duck Lake Rd (464) between Browning and Babb. No problems at all.
As for diesel, if you're travelling around Calgary, there is a Costco on the east side Hwy 201/17Ave that has diesel at all of the pumps and is significantly cheaper than anywhere else in the area. Further north it is readily available but the only other Costco in AB for diesel is in Grand Prairie.

Had to buy two truck tires in Whitehorse, Yukon. Checked prices at both Canadian Tire and the Walmart next door. Got Goodyears at the Walmart and the price, after the US/CA dollar conversion, was the same as the ones I bought at the Walmart in Great Falls, MT. So, most food and fuel may be more expensive in Canada, but some other items are not significantly different than the US.

You'll have no issues with fuel up north. If you're in the area for an extended period you'll be able to find the hours and best way to access them. Northern Alberta is definitely not a barren waste land. Towns are fairly close and I'd venture to say no more than an hour from major town to major town. North of Athabasca or Peace River, they'll get a bit more sparse.

Thanks everyone - great info. The farthest north I've been is McBride in BC and Jasper in Alberta - in 2007. Looking forward to the adventure!
