Colorado hwy 160 from Walsenburg to Durango

We are in Pueblo and want to go to Durango. I have a 2019 Silverado 3500 SRW pulling a 2016 Cedar Creek 38CK and have concerns about Hwy 160 from Walsenburg to Durango. I’m concerned about the road conditions and Wolf Creek pass. Anyone have any insight on this route or should I be looking at an alternate route?

Last month I drove that route with my F150, 3.5l V6 EcoBoost pulling a 3500 pound TT. We had no problem going up or down the pass. There were plenty of trucks and other campers going both directions. It is one of the main east/west roads in that part of Colorado. In the past I drove that route with a Damon Escaper built on a 1988 Toyota C/C with a 2.4l 4 cyl engine and auto trans. The Toyota did it without any problems. If a 6000 pound minimotorhome with 120 hp can make it, I think your one ton can.

Been on that road with the setup in my signature a year ago. Less weight, but a lot less power, too. Just take your time on that, you should be fine.

I forgot to mention the my 19 Silverado is a Duramax diesel.

I'm sure you'll be fine. I pulled it west to east in August with no issues.

It will be one of the most beautiful drives you will take. Turn on the exhaust brake, gear down and you will be fine. I love that drive. We drove it once at night in a snow storm pulling a motorcycle trailer.

Been over it several times in the last 10 years going both ways. As was said earlier, turn on your diesel exhaust brake, plan to take it easy, and enjoy the ride. Beautiful country, in spite of the pine beetle damage on and around Wolf Creek Pass.

Check the weather conditions before you go; there have been two snow storms across the mountains recently and another system is due early this weekend. You should be just fine since Colorado keeps that hiway open for the skiers and truck traffic. Be sure to carry snow chains just in case (chain laws in effect). This time of year it should be fantastic.

I have pulled over Wolf Creek with my 2018 Silverado 1500 pulling a 28 ft 7000 lbs trailer. No problems, just take it slow and easy going down the west side. It is approximately 9 miles at 9 percent down grade. Two switchbacks near the bottom, slow speed. Beautiful drive, don't miss the terrific scenery thru here.

I drive that route pretty frequently. You should be fine, just respect the mountain and you’ll get over it safely.

My son called yesterday from the Taos NM area and did say they are getting snow up at Wolf Creek, we are skiers so this is always a big thing for us and who will open first

I have been in snow storms on Wolf Creek Pass in July...

I want to thank everyone for their reply’s. We drove through Wolf Creek Pass yesterday. It was the most beautiful drive that we have been on, it was a bright sunny day, the trees were turning colors and the views were spectacular. Exhaust brakes make towing 16,000 pounds through the mountains enjoyable, as long as you have good weather. We won’t hesitate going through again.

For what it is worth, Wolf Creek Pass has a nasty reputation, but, it was formed by truckers 30 plus years ago. many changes have been made for the better. I would take Wolf Creek Pass 10 times before I would take Red Mountain Pass once.
