Fire/road closure between Yellowstone and Grand Tetons NPs

Incident Overview

Red flag conditions on August 22 led to rapid fire growth across Jackson Lake and Highway 89. The highway remains closed at Leeks Marina (south) and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park (north). The road will be reopened when fire danger is reduced and hazardous trees are removed. Flagg Ranch Campground and Headwaters Lodge were evacuated on the morning of August 23, due to potential for continued fire growth to the north. The fire is now established across both sides of Highway 89 and burning to the northeast in Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Management of the fire in now under the command of Great Basin Incident Management Team 4 under the direction of Incident Commander Tim Roide.

The Berry Fire is being managed to protect people and property, enhance the area’s natural resources where appropriate, and safely and effectively utilize firefighting resources. The fire will be monitored and management actions will be implemented in advance of any potential impact on values at risk. Trail closures remain in effect near the fire area.

Smoke from the fire may be visible along roadways in the northern portion of the park, especially from the east side road along Jackson Lake and US Highways 89/191/287. During evening and morning hours, smoke may be present along park roadways. Drivers should use caution when smoke is present on park roadways. Please use headlights and slow your speed.

That's one of a many fires out there . the maple fire in west yellowstone . has not closed the west entrance yet . but if smoke gets to think they will be using pilot cars to keep people moving . the fire laid down today but high winds expected tomorrow . the hopes are to keep the fire east of the madison river . but it is encroaching on madison junction .

"Closures: At this time, fire managers anticipate being able to reopen Highway 89/191/287 sometime Tuesday, August 30. This is subject to change dependent on weather and fire conditions. Until then the highway does remain closed between the South Gate of Yellowstone National Park and Leeks Marina to ensure the safety of firefighters and the public.
While Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and Bridger Teton National Forest all have area closures in effect, both National Parks are open to visitors. This includes Leeks Marina and most visitor destinations and services. Travel times to Yellowstone may be increased depending on planned routes. Check before you go. And please drive carefully, with lights on, due to both visibility concerns from smoke and increased vehicle numbers."

The road is open. Just drove it and saw lots of burned forest along the roadside. Very little smoke.
