Hello

If you have time there are two very long stretches of R66. Very interesting history on these 2 HYs. I have done one and hope to do the other. The one I have done was well worth it.

New Mexico Travel

While there are several "road improvement projects" currently active on westbound I-40 there's but one that seems to be causing longer delays. That's at milepost 177 - Zuzax (they wanted to be listed last in the state atlas!). The good news is that this will be an active bottleneck for just 3 or 4 more days (from today Aug. 6th). Just slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery of the eastern approach to Albuquerque.

As you traverse the 400+ miles of I-40 you'll be on or paralleling the "Mother Road" - Route 66. There are numerous historical attractions in most every town that's traversed as well as some magnificent scenery. From Tucumcari in the east (which has the only college offering a degree in wind energy as well as several businesses on the historic register) to Gallup on the western border (with the unique flavor and history of the Navajo culture) New Mexico is a totally unique adventure.

If you are able, drive slowly and linger. You're guaranteed to enjoy the experience.

A friend just did that drive within the past two days. No problems, smooth sailing for them.

Good luck and have a safe drive!

For your info:
The bridge crossing the Miss. River at Memphis on I-40 is closed due to structural crack in steel framework. You most likely will have to re-route North or South.

Howdy, folks. Have made the bulk of the trip. Sitting in Kingman right now. "roger" the construction sections. It is a patchwork of really nice roads and some pretty rough sections. Being a Florida driver for most of my life, I "perk up" when I get to steep downgrades. Going west they start around Flagstaff. I am towing with an F-150 with 10 speed trans. I let trans handle the downgrades and just set the cruise speed level that made me comfortable. Usually between 50-55. Only once going down a curvy hill did I feel like I was in a Sopwith Camel dogfight with an 18-wheeler. So, I'll count that a success. Appreciate the tips and advice. They are all appreciated. As far as drama, the only other bit of that was at a Love's truck stop where we were gassing up. We witnessed what appeared to be a would-be shop lifter chased into the parking lot by a half dozen truckers who took exception to his venture. They subdued him, returned the merchandise to the store, and explained the errors of his ways quite succinctly. And a tad physically. Hats off to truckers!

We went through Amarillo 2 weeks ago and we didn't see any construction but then we were on the east side headed north to Dumas and Dalhart on our annual Anniversary vacation trip to Eagle Nest NM.
